Essentials for Road Trips

1. Pack every last piece of produce in your house to enjoy for breakfast.  I never said I was normal.

Billy loved the smell of steamed broccoli this morning...oops.

IMG_0235.jpg

2. Get in a killer morning workout so that it actually feels really good to sit down for a long period of time.

Workout:

8 miles treadmill 1% incline 7:53 Average Pace

I also taught spin for 45 minutes:)

3.  Party music and a best friend dance partner.

IMG_2849.jpg

4. A book that my student gave me...she knows me too well, I like reading books with big fonts, double spaced and meant for adolescents.

.IMG_2851.JPG

5.  Mandatory stop at Cafe Rio in Cedar City.  1/2 for lunch and 1/2 for dinner.  $7.75 for two meals...I'll take that.

The guy working there was awesome.  I told him to put on as much pico as he was allowed and he went the extra mile.  Hopefully, he still has a job tomorrow.

IMG_2840.JPG

6.  Dessert provided by bff Megan. Best. Candy. Ever.

IMG_2846.JPG

7.  All 9 Seasons of Friends.  This show will never get old to me.

IMG_2843.JPG

8. Open up some blogs on your computer while you are still home with internet so that you can read them on the road....too bad I couldn't comment.

Santa, I want an internet card.

IMG_2841.JPG

9. Food Network Magazine.

IMG_2852.jpg

10.  ?????

Do you ever have vegetables for breakfast?

-I do not discriminate according to the time of day, that is cruel.

Do you drive on road-trips?

-Billy drives the WHOLE way.  He loves driving and I don't.  I have much more important things to do as you can see:)

Tell me your road-trip/traveling necessities by filling in number 10!!! Pretty please!

Z always always drives on road trips. Which is odd since I am a control freak, ha! But apparently my road rage scares him? :)

I see my blog on there :) LOL.

10 = a stop at DQ for a blizzard. It's a tradition in my family!

While I would prefer that my boyfriend drive the entire way, I know that is completely unfair. So, usually I drive in metropolitan areas and he drives the long stretches of highway. In the end it works out.

Like Matt, we always stop for a milkshake. McDonald's Wendy's and Friendly's are a few of our favorites. We try to limit it to one a trip...

I love your discriminating comment about the vegetables. Very funny!

Do I ever have veg for breakfast ... yes, I do! Especially when there is veg lasagna or something scrumptious.

I never drive on long trips. My DH prefers to drive and gets sick as a passenger, so the longer I have gone w.o. driving on trips, the less I want to.

Have fun!

FRIENDS is my favorite! I quote it ALL the time.

I always pack a zillion snacks for roadtrips. My boyfriend asks what I have in my "kitchen purse."

Is it totally uncool of me to have zoomed up that picture to try and see if I was on the screen? Too bad I have the eyes of an 93 year old. :)

I have a weird thing about eating vegetables before noon... I don't like to do it! Breakfasts are always sweet for me :)

Lucky for me my bf drives the whole way, I hate driving too!

#10 Trail Mix

#11 Lots of water = lots of pee breaks :)

My #10 would be my jump rope. I have Factor V Leiden (a genetic clotting disorder) and need to make frequent stops for stretching and getting the blood flowing in my limbs. I get some really strange looks at the rest stops while I'm jumping rope and pretty much acting like a 7 year old in the parking lot, but I don't care. After a few hours of candy and having to sit and sit and sit, I love me my jump rope!

An essential on road trips is a little "U" shaped neck pillow (you know the ones I'm talking about?)so that your head doesn't bob around while you're trying to take a little nap.

At December 18, 2010 at 7:20 PM , Blogger J said...

I don't usually drive, Brian loves to drive. And I don't think I have ever had veggies for breakfast unless it was in an omelet.

Road trip necessities...umm you pretty much covered the best car ride every for me. Give me a book, music and Friends and I am entertained for HOURS! OH how I love friends.

I drive the whoooole way. I'm a control freak like that. I also get car sick, so I have lots of reasons to always be the driver.

10. Either audiobooks or REALLY good playlists.

#10 - Queen loaded on the ipod (especially Don't Stop Me Now). When I'm feeling a little bit tired, I listen to Queen on repeat. I sing at the top of my lungs and even incorporate elaborate hand gestures. It does the trick!

Friends is and always will be the best
Cannot read in the car :(

My BF drives the whole way whenever we take a trip. I must have at least 3 books with me just in case I get bored with one. Also, water, gum, and some kind of snacks--usually cheese and crackers or popcorn.

I also like to read women's health magazine out loud to the BF--especially the sex stuff--he's always amazed at what women think!

I LOVE Friends too!! :)

I never drive...I don't want to and my hubby doesn't want me to either. :) Everybody's happy that way.

#10 - COFFEE! Preferably Dunkin Donuts. We always have to make a pit stop on the way out of town.

I love that I can recognize about 95% of those blogs just by looking at their wee little pictures!

10. A pillow! Jordan always drives and I cannot for the life of me stay awake in the car for more than 2 hours. Quality sleep time!

Hope you are having a blast!

I have veggies for breakfast if they are in eggs.

I prefer to drive most of the way. My husband makes me nervous when he drives and I'm a back seat driver so this often leads to arguments.

10. A map! We like to know exactly where we are in each state. We also like to play something we call "The map game". We have a map which has every state in the US. We go through and play trivia. For example, we'll say "Georgia has 6 cities which are zoomed in on the side, name 4 of them." We're kind of geography dorks.

What a fun road trip! I really need to watch all of the seasons of Friends. It's such a good show. I don't think I could do just veggies for breakfast. If they were in an omelet, yes. But, plain. Nuh uh. Haha, but I applaud you!

How in the world did you get all of the blogs pulled up on your computer like that without internet???

trail mix, carrots, hummus, grapes, beef jerky, lara bars, and lots more!! My snacky food. And for breakfast, I had leftover salmon/brown rice/carrots in bowl with a scoop of cashew butter. Weird? Yes, good? yes? Breath mint.....yes!!!! Safe travels. :)

I open a lot of blogs like that too! I even did it today so I could take my computer to a dead zone and still read my fav blogs!!

I would add a camera to that list ;)

You kicked my trash today girl! I'm so glad you liked the treats. I hope you guys made it safe. I love all of your things on your list...I'd say my #10 is a stop at some maverick along the way. :)

-Veggies for breakfast when part of an omelet or fritatta (fancy!)

-We usually split our driving on long trips. We'll drive for 2-3 hours at a time then switch. There has been the occasional 6.5 hour drive back to where we are from where my husband has driven the entire way, refusing to switch.

Number 10 is a tie:
10a. I like to knit in the car!
10b. Coffeeeeee!

Looks like you were kept busy on your road trip! Just the way i like it... now only if my man liked driving... id be set! haha!

I don't think I've ever had veggies for breakfast but I wouldn't turn them down either... I'm with on the killer workout before long car trips tho!

Umm, I like driving but I like being in charge of the stereo more! And my essentials are MUSIC, bottled water and candy... not necessarily in that order...

We alternate road trip driving - but I don't drive through big cities (which, in my defintion, includes places like Louisville and Chattanooga).

10. Runner's World magazine

We also play word games in the car - like trying to be the first one to find signs starting with each letter of the alphabet

At December 18, 2010 at 10:22 PM , Blogger XLMIC said...

#10 would be lots of water.

Why wouldn't one eat veggies for breakfast? Like you said, that would be discriminatory!

We sometimes fight over who gets to drive. I really like driving ... usually. But he doesn't like how I drive. (yeah, well, try 5 hrs and 30 min from Disneyland to San Francisco, baby, arriving at 3:15 a.m. and then tell me you have a problem with my driving.... oh... ooops... yeah, I drive a tad fast sometimes).

The reality of 10 would be going through the bag of kid tricks to keep the kids happy. Books, toys that make noise, snacks, drinks, puppets, music. Happy kids = happy trip.

10. An ice cold DDP!

My number 10 would be my Kindle. I love it so much!!

I drive, but my fiance drives way more than I do. I prefer to be the passenger.

I LOVE love love Hershey's bars!!
I'm actually taking the bus across Canada - and it takes 2 days 8 hours. So I'm planning on knitting an entire scarf, reading 4 books and hopefully watching a few Smallville episodes. And I have my ipod - so I can catch up with my favourite podcasts (ex: More Hip Than Hippie :) )

At December 19, 2010 at 4:50 AM , Blogger Jessica said...

I think a portable therapist would be my number 10. Road trips drive me insane with boredom, and make all my muscles seize up. Sadly I am too lethal to drive :P

The closest I have ever come to having veggies for breakfast is putting pumpkin in my smoothies...not that I don't love my veggies, but you must have a stomach of steel to get away with eating broccoli first thing in the morning.

Great workout as usual by the way!

At December 19, 2010 at 5:19 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

I love veggies for breakfast - lentil soup crowded with veggies or a veggie chili. YUM.

10. If I'm driving and alone, a good audio book. If I'm with Dave... a pillow, because I will inevitably fall asleep.

At December 19, 2010 at 5:43 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Haha that looks like such a fun road trip! Mind if I join ya? :P

10. Bring music! Especially ones good for a inpromptu karaoke!! :D

Love that my blog is on there :)
I cannot read in the car...I wish I could...it would make things go by so much faster! Enjoy your trip!

I usually drive because I'm the one with a sense of direction.

I basically eat whatever I'm hungry for at mealtimes....so that can mean a sandwich at breakfast and pancakes at dinner....
Hope you have a good trip!!!!

At December 19, 2010 at 6:45 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

We both want to drive, so I usually lose that battle. That's ok, on long road trips I can sleep or do other things, hehe!

I'll eat veggies at anytime, in fact, I'm not afraid of putting them in oatmeal either

At December 19, 2010 at 6:56 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

I love friends! My sister and I each have all of the 10 seasons. It's a little excessive but we really love that show. :)

I like veges in my egge so for breakfast. We drove from Florida to Colorado with 7 kids when we moved here. I don't want to do another road trip.

Friends is my all-time fave! I can't tell you how many times I've seen all the episodes and I will STILL watch it every time I catch it on TV. I have the Friends trivia game, but it's no fun because I have no competition!!!

At December 19, 2010 at 7:11 AM , Blogger dawn @ running the dawn said...

we rescue every ounce of produce from our house before we leave too! no veggies left behind! and of course i eat them for breakfast...almost daily. gotta get my nutrients on!

we split driving. i'm pretty sure we both hate it, although i've never gotten mr. dawn to admit it. i'm pretty beastly driving at night, so he gets us through the big cities and i take the night shift. works perfectly.

we watch the office, since i've never been able to convinced mr. dawn of the genius that is friends. (don't you mean you own all 10 seasons? cause i definitely watched all 10 several times through driving back and forth this summer (mr. dawn was taking classes out of state, 8 hours out of state).

and finally, number 10) phone with abilities to play the call through the speakers. we call all of our family members and talk to them on speaker whilst on road trips. its super fun!

At December 19, 2010 at 7:18 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

True: I probably quote something from Friends on a daily basis, and get so sad when people don't get it because IT WAS THE BEST SHOW EVER.

I haven't driven a car in about 6 years (ahh subway and cabs...), so any driving from me would be extremely dangerous :) Hope you have/had a good trip!

At December 19, 2010 at 7:21 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

I wish I could read that much while driving. I can barely glance at a blog on a road trip, but I'm with you on watching favorite shows.

At December 19, 2010 at 7:51 AM , Blogger Unknown said...

I love to read food mags too! I seriously love your blog so I gave you a stylish blogger award. You can check it out on my blog and participate if you want! Its kinda fun!

Me and the girls? Magazines, junk food, pillow for sleeping.

Me and the hubs? A book definitely. Either I read aloud while he drives, or we listen to an audio book. Lots to drink and usually sunflower seeds to snack on.

Love veggies for breakfast! Leftovers are my alltime favourite breakfast food. As for road trips, got to have plenty of music that you can sing along to, water, and snacks. It also helps to have someone along who understands you don't want to chat the whole way but is willing to sing loudly (and off key) along with you.

At December 19, 2010 at 9:16 AM , Blogger Ashley G said...

10. Lots of excellent music, preferably in the form of mix cd's. (no mp3 jack in our cars).

I drive alot b/c I tend to think I'm a better driver than my husband. If the trip is more than 2 hours, I insist on driving.

Vegis for breakfast is always good when they are stuffed with eggs and cheese!!!

At December 19, 2010 at 9:40 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

I always have dried fruit/nuts or Larabars. And I drink a lot of water! Billy and I swap turns driving on a road trip - usually every 1.5-2 hours. Billy's usually in charge of the music. :)

I eat vegetables for breakfast every now and then. I usually crave oats but I'll eat yummy dinner leftovers from the night before if I'm in the mood.

At December 19, 2010 at 10:49 AM , Blogger Maria said...

Great workout!
I cant read in the car, so essentials are fun CDs to sing along to, some water, and maybe a cereal bar. We might stop to stretch our legs but normally would not buy food on the way.
The only time I have veggies for breakfast is when I add pumpkin to porridge haha! They belong on my dinner plate!

At December 19, 2010 at 2:39 PM , Blogger Jess @ Blonde Ponytail said...

Thanksfully, my hubs like to drive too leaving me to day dream or read! We tried a Book on CD last road trip and that made it fly by!

Is the Food Network, not the best channel ever?!!

The only veggies I have had for breakfast are in an omelette! go pro-duce!

I'm just going through all of your old posts (you know, since I'm a newish reader and obviously don't have a life on a Saturday night so I'm stalking you) and I have fallen more and more in love with you. A) You like chocolate lab puppies and I HAVE A CHOCOLATE LAB puppy! His name is Cliff and I think he is the greatest thing since chocolate syrup. B) You and I have the same fave candy bar. Seriously, I could eat Hershey's Cookies n Cream until I barfed. Right next to coconut m&ms and the old Hershey's Chocolate Mint Cookie bar that they discontinued. Sigh....back to stalking.
