Quit the habit- It has been a year.

One year ago I was sitting in the periodontist chair about to have surgery on my gums.  Basically they took gum tissues from the roof of my mouth to replace them on the receding gums on four of my teeth.  It sucked big time.

My insurance barely covered any of it and Billy and I already spent our life savings on a t.v. the size of our wall.

My Dad being the generous man he is said he would PAY for the surgery if I quit my habit.

My spiraling addiction had taken over my life.

Diet Coke ruled my thoughts and paychecks.

"Don't bother me, I am drinking!"

Top Benefits of Quitting my Addiction:

1. I can now spend all of my coke money on skittles and leather jackets.

2. I actually drink water now. (Wish I could say it cleared up my skin but I still have the acne of a 14 year old boy)

3. I only have to pee 3 times during the night rather than 4.

4. Love the feeling of being free from 'having' to have something to feel energy.

5. Obviously we all know the different health consequences of fake sugars and the correlation between obesity and soda drinkers.

6. I don't have to lie to Billy telling him, "Off to the gym for a late night cardio session," when in reality I was going to 7-11 and sticking my mouth under the d.c. dispenser.

7. I don't get a headache when I can't get a caffeine fix.

8. I lost a few lbs after quitting my soda habit.

If this addiction has taken over your life please seek help.  Rely on support systems to get you out of the darkness you are living in

So I am being dramatic.  I really don't think a little diet soda is that bad, but if you are drinking a wee bit too much I definitely would cut back.  It is probably hard to take advice coming from the candy monster but I do have a bachelors degree in Health Education if that means anything.

What do you think about diet sodas?

- I am kind of an all or nothing kind of a girl, so for me I need to choose no diet soda and no regular soda.  Exceptions include when I steal a sip from Billy's DP when he is not looking.  For those of you that understand the principle of moderation I think it is totally okay every now and then.

I used to be the same way! Thankfully when I moved out I was too poor to keep up drinking it the way I did and now it's just habit to drink water instead!

wow, impressive that you've been off soda for a year! good work, i bet it was super hard in the beginning. but way to push through and focus on all the benefits. my husband used to really "need" caffeine to keep from getting headaches. then he quit and never drinks it anymore. it's way better.

Eww I got the heebies just thinking about your surgery. I used to be a big time diet pop drinker, but it's been giving me serious indegestion lately. Blame it on my old age, I guess. Damn kids.

My orthodontist made a comment about the gums on my front teeth receding a little bit.....it makes me nervous that I might need surgery! I hope not...blah.

I like Diet Pepsi. I drink it multiple times per week. I don't feel bad about it. However, it's expensive and I wish I didn't drink it as much......but I really like it! In high school, I never drank soda during cross country/track season, but I don't really know why....just didn't. Hmmmm. I think moderation is a good thing.

I used to drink REAL soda by the gallon! I have never been a huge diet soda fan, but now I prefer water :)

Oh yeah I was super addicted to DC. So is my mom, and when she quits she gets really bad headaches. I started limiting myself to one a day this summer and now I have cut them out completely and I'm so happy. It was costing me at least 3-5$ a day to get my fix, and my teeth were turning brown. gross!

i probably drink too much DC or diet dr. pepper. but the way i see it is that i'm not drinking 6-8 cans a day. i've got it to 1-2. justification much? hahah

Ooh! I work for a Dentist and that is NOT a fun surgery!

#6-ha!

I used to drink GALLONS of fountain soda when I was in college. I'm old so this was a few years ago! I was a bit clueless back then as I would also go to Perkin's with my roommate and order a baked potato AND a breadbowl because they were both fat free....

I rarely ever drink it now-maybe once or twice a year. Now, if I could just kick the coffee habit...

Soda is my weakness, especially mountain dew. I've tried to kick the habit but I love it sooooo much. I usually only have one per day and if I do have another, it's caffeine free. But I do think it will be a goal of mine for 2011. I'd say "I'll start now," but I just got home from the market where soda was 4 for $10 :)

My boyfriend quit drinking Coke cold turkey almost two years ago! He only drinks water, iced tea, or a sports drink in the hot weather. And beer! I don't drink much pop at all, but sometimes I want an ice cold Coke or a root beer. It tastes so sweet, only a few sips are necessary for me to get my craving under control. I don't drink diet cause the stuff with real sugar tastes much better! But I'd rather drink iced tea or water with lemon anytime.

1. Diet soda, and its corresponding faux-sugars and chemicals, and HFCS freak me out, period.

2. I've been drinkig soda since I was teeny, like, as in, 18 mos old. Thanks, Aunt. I dislike the HFCS and weirdness also in regular soda, but I love love love it soooooo much. Yum.

3. I quit drinking soda Oct. 1, and haven't had any since. I miss it terribly :(.

you know how there are yo-yo dieters, i'm a yo-yo'er with soda. it's a constant battle. d.p. is my drink of choice. i go for weeks without and one social drink and i'm off the wagon. a can a day though makes me feel like all is well with the world. that sounds sane, right? :) i'm working on it...thanks for the reminder!

its funny. i used to have a diet coke every once in a while but not they are just way too sweet for me. I drink kombucha, that helps with my energy mid day. Okay and you know i love me some wine, but some small glass each night. hehe!

Oh but I will admit.......if you are ever in Mexico, they have the BEST cocola lights. Taste nothing like diet coke but oh so good with chips and salsa!!

OMG, how scary! I am going to have to have gum surgery in the future but I don't drink DC...my husband just told me that soda drinking is the one major cause of obesity in the US. I am so glad you are putting the word out, thanks for this post!!

oh, i'm so glad you quit that habit. it really is so bad for you/us/we. i don't drink soda unless i have the stomach flu. then i'll sip on sprite. i was addicted to diet coke in high school until i got pregnant with my first baby. i had IBS symptoms so bad all through high school. it was miserable. then, i quit drinking diet coke and what do you know, i was cured! nasty stuff.

good for you!

I am totally addicted to regular coke. I have to have coke everyday. I have it down to once 32 ounce a day which I get on the way to work EVERYDAY!

I am a soda quitter too! I just wasn't happy with all the good choices I was making and then drinking all that crap. I took up coffee, of course, but I feel like that isn't quite so bad ... who knows.

Wow, that's craaaazy! I actually quit diet sodas because I realized they were bothering my stomach.... no more soda-related stomachaches! Hurray.

What is it about diet soda that makes your gums recede? Is it actually the fake sugars or the phosphoric acid? And did your dentist tell you that soda was the source of the problem?

I ask because I have receding gums and used to drink a lot of diet soda (maybe 2 a week now, of Zevia brand). I told my dentist I was really concerned about my gums and he kind of just brushed it off. It kinda pissed me off. Waiting to grill the guy when I get a check up while I'm home for Christmas.

Bahaha, love this! Maybe now you can buy all the different kinds of Skittles too... I'm a fan of the purple bag. I am not, however, a fan of pop (diet or otherwise). I used to drink it once in a while but quit doing even that about a year ago. I'm a tea fanatic tho. Some days all 8 cups of water are consumed as tea.

I never liked pop as a kid because I hated that when you burped it fizzed in your nose. I'd probably like pop now, but I tell myself I don't because I don't have any sense of moderation. I have a very addictive personality.

I am totally not a soda drinker and/or supporter. Although, I must admit, I need my coffee fix in the morning or I am not nice.. at all.

And, I have acne like a 14 year old girl - we could date. bahahaha

This is totally my vice. I can go without chocolate, candies, ice cream, desserts, but I just want a freakin' soda. It's not even a caffeine thing because I don't get withdrawal symptoms, and I don't feel a "pick me up". I just like my sugar in liquid form.

I understand the moderation thing. I'm trying to put that in effect now.

By the way - for what it's worth - I started using something called Differin last March, and it took about a month, but it totally cleared up my face. It's a gel or cream that you put on at night.

I want to give up the habit, but I feel like I have given up some many good things to eat in my life, and I REALLY want to keep my diet drink. I do TRY to control it somewhat and sometimes I attempt to give it up totally, but so far, not so good at it. Urgh! I get so tired of giving up my favorite foods and drinks...give up, give up, give up - it's gets so frustrating!

I had the same surgery! It sucked! My dentist blamed genetics for my receding gums. I have never been much of a pop drinker, too sugary for me.

wait so did Diet Soda do that to you? That's nuts! I used to drink it a bit but totally gave it up and now I don't miss it one bit!

I love diet soda. The past few months I have drastically cut down though. Everything is find in moderation. I also switched to seltzer for a lot of my soda fixes. Squeeze a little lemon in there are you still get the carbonation without the sugars!

I am good with moderation. Tell me I can't have something, and I will obsess about it. I used to drink 2 litters of diet coke in college and grad school, kicked the habit when I got pregnant, now I drink one or 2 cans/day and I am OK with that!

I think it is great that you kicked the habit. I personally do not drink soda... I do drink Soda Water like it is going out of style.. but as for the sugar stuff I can not stand it. There are other things that I am obsessed with... such as Coffee!! I love it. Water and Coffee are my staples. Now, that surgery you had... My dentist is threatening me that I will have to have it because of brushing too hard and using whitening tooth paste - so maybe if I kicked my coffee habit I wouldn't need the whitening stuff and then I wouldn't need that surgery!

You already saw my post on the whole Diet Coke thing. The sad thing is even though I know how bad it is for me thats still my addiction.. Im slowly getting better and hope to improve even more..

DANG!! You've got so many comments already. Maybe I'll leave without posting since I don't want you to get addicted to comments to replace the diet coke ;)

So what do I think about diet coke? I think about it this way....would you want to wash your house with water or coke??? Your body is like your house, and you want to take care of it so it will take care of you!

BTW...they wanted to do that evil surgery on my gums where my bottom 4 front teeth are, and I said....HELLO NO!!! And, the horrible tooth falling out consequences never came to pass. Thank the Lord (literally...not taking His name in vain!)

Pot Stirrer!! Rebel!

Lol

I don't do sodas anymore- maybe once a year if at a potluck, and there is no choice, and it's well water with too much iron in the tap.

But like so many others...coffee...it gets me moving. I look forward to the day I can enjoy a cup without having to be in a drive through to keep from having someone spill it on me. =D

PS thanks for pointing out to me that I have the cutest kids ever...=D You will someday too,!

Good job Naester! Did Billy give you some reward for this??? I think you deserve at least a certificate or maybe a sticker. Ok but on the serious note I've never been a fan and haven't had carbonation since junior high when we threw our markers and binders at Mr. Anderson and stuck gummy bears in Megan Eisenhart's glasses. I wrote a paper on it too which just convinced me even more. Soda=No go. I'm so proud of you! :)

hahaha - love your list. I've never been a big soda drinker. not sure why - just don't care for it. BUT, I've had the same gum surgery! Mine was due to a roller-skating accident where I feel on my face. That's a good, long story. So painful - I'm glad we made it through and hopefully won't have to visit a periodontist anytime soon.
