Do you count calories?

Billy put on his apron last night and got to work in the kitchen because it is logical that he cook after studying and school for 15 hours that day because I was to busy laying in bed catching up on old episodes of The OC.  That is how to make a marriage work.

I did do my part to add some carbs to the meal (because it was obviously lacking them) and made the garlic toast in the back.

IMG 5989

Followed shortly by some Swedish Fish from my cutest friend Pam L:)  She is right...."Swedish Fish are made in Canada! Canadian Fish just don't have the same ring." They were great fuel for a late night yoga class with my cousin.

Judging from the x-ray's we are on the road to recovery with the femur(s)........dare I tell you the truth? Yep, it is both of them....the right one is really minor but I have had an itching that it was also fractured since the beginning but it only hurt about 1/10 as bad as the left (I am the champion of denial and just thought I was imagining things).  On the VERY bright side, both of them are recovering quite nicely.

No one is allowed to say I am sorry or that it is sad because I knew deep down for the past month or so that both legs were injured and it isn't like it is going to take any longer to heal.  It's all good because they are both healing at the same rate and I am actually really happy because I am learning there is a lot more to me than just a runner.

Someone sent me this quote...I forgot who so please forgive me but I absolutely love it.....

"When we feel stuck...going nowhere....even starting to slip backward-we might actually be backing up to get a running start."

This whole injury thing is going to make me a SMARTER, stronger runner and who knows what what running start I am going to have.......I foresee big things up ahead:)

I was able to talk to the doctor for 90 minutes...yep, my doc rocks and actually spends time with his patients answering all of their questions plus I mean I am pretty funny so who wouldn't want to spend quality time with me.  We talked a whole lot about calories.  To get these bones whole FAST and to make sure I get a cycle that is natural and that it isn't just caused by birth control I gotta focus in on calories among the MANY other things I am doing to heal.  This will also help prevent future injuries from occurring.

Basically, we just want to make sure that I am getting more than enough (and from the right sources) calories to keep up with my physical activity and excessive energy.  It is just one more thing I can do to speed up recovery.  I have no idea where I am at with calories because I eat what I want and when I want it, he just wants me to keep track so that we can make sure it is the right amount because it takes a whole lot of ice cream cones to build bones again.

P.S. I promise we won't be talking about injuries forever, girly thingee's, or how I am 96% brain dead and before you know it I will be doing treadmill marathons again (okay, that is a lie....those are the sort of things that got me in trouble in the first place).

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I don't really have anything to say with this post and really just wanted feedback from all of my best friends and what you do......

Do you count calories?  Do you estimate?  Do you eat according to feel or 'suggested calories'?  In the past have you counted calories?  Do you like it/hate it?  Why?  Do you think it is helpful/hurtful for you?  Do you keep a log?

I used to count calories but it got to be more harmful than hurtful. I have a general idea in my head most days but I don't try to think about it too much. I do keep a food log, but more to see if my bad running days might be caused by something I am or am not eating.

I used to count calories and I've always been a label reader so now I dont formally do it, I just keep a rough estimate in my head. I did count again when my legs were broken and then right after the marathon bc I was eating too much junk and I knew it and its a good way to keep yourself accountable.
I think it can be helpful and it definitely teaches you a lot about nutrition and what youre putting into your body.
Good luck with it, cant wait to hear about it.

I have been keeping a log since January. I find it helpful, except when I eat out on the weekend and I KNOW I went over. Then I just feel guilty even writing it down.

I gave a shoutout to you on my blog today!

I don't count calories. I know I eat a lot. I've been thinking about doing one day during heavy distance training where I count calories for a blog post just to amuse myself! lol

Two sides to the coin... it can be helpful or harmful, really. It depends on the kind of person you are, I think. You also have to remember you burn a lot of calories, you need a certain amount just to live with no activity, and so on...

Good luck :)

No I don't count calories at all. I know I've been deficient before though by the way I feel. My femur fracture didn't even show up 12 weeks later! Rest up girly! I do believe we learn from all of this no matter how hard.

I estimate calories - I only started during marathon training to make sure I was consuming enough calories, since I was never a big eater (and didnt know how much my hunger would scream in training!). I don't intend on contnuing doing this after marathon training though.

I've used the daily plate to count calories in the past. I try to use it as information for myself, to help me be better informed about what I'm eating and portion sizes. If I feel like it's getting obsessive I tell my husband so he can help me stop for awhile. If I'm active and healthy and just getting information, it works really well. If I'm inactive and unhealthy, it becomes a control thing and isn't good for me at all.

I try this every once in a while with an app on my phone. It is very eye opening. I try not to do it all of the time because I tend to lean towards disordered eating if I focus on it too much. It can be good every once in a while though to get you back on track. Good luck with your healing. I really enjoy reading!

I went through a calorie-counting phase but it did more harm on my body than anything. I gave myself too many limitations and if I reached a certain calorie count I would stop even if I was still hungry. I only ate what I thought was enough and I was WAY off. If you do it correctly though and you're under the guidance of your doctor then I think it may beneft you. You look like you're doing ok though so I wouldn't worry! As long as you're not restricting yourself then you have nothing to worry about :) I totally admire the relationship you have with food!

I've never been a counter, but I feel like I usually have some idea in my head since I look at labels and generally keep track of what I'm eating. I worry sometimes about trying to make sure I get enough calories when I'm at peak marathon training weeks, but that's really only about 8 weeks out of the year. The rest of the year I'd rather maintain or lose a few pounds.

I am really proud of you for realizing this, and adnitting it. I truly believe that the more calories you get in, the faster you will be to recovery and running! And you will also be healthier overall!

I don't count at all, but I assume I get enough. If I don't eat enough, I wake up at 2am with a grumbly stomach, and no one wants that. I do run a fair amount, but as long as I feel good while running, I don't feel inspired to change my leftover pizza breakfasts. :)

I counted calories to a T for a long time, until I got a general idea of how many calories were in things. I thing it's good to be aware of calories. At the same time, it's important not to obsess about it.

I count calories when cooking so I can be sure I'm making some 1000 calorie serving.

I've tried counting calories before, but I found it hurt more than helped, because the more I focused on it, the more I stressed and the more I wanted to eat, haha. I definitely don't count now; however, I will occasionally look up the stats for a new recipe that I think I will eat often if I really have NO idea how many calories are in it and want an estimation.

The one thing I have problems with is figuring out how much I SHOULD be eating. I know they have all those calculators out there, but I don't think they really work well for super active people. When I eat the amount they tell me I lose weight really fast, which sounds good but I think it's too fast and sends my body into "OMG you're starving us we must preserve fat!!" mode and I immediately go right back up to where I was before. It's frustrating! I keep saying I want to see a sports nutritionist but I feel like that would be expensive and I don't even know where to start with finding one...

I used to count calories obsessively, but that did not turn out well. Nowadays, the idea of counting calories is exhausting, and I can't imagine doing it again.

I love to eat when I'm hungry and not think about every single thing I'm putting in my mouth.

But I know lots of people who rely on calorie counting to stay healthy, so I definitely think it just depends on the individual.

With your doctor's recommendation, I think it'd be really helpful for you to count calories, at least to know where you are on the spectrum. I've wanted to do that a few times, but I get so fed up with tracking everything I'm eating and then measuring and looking it up!

Good luck, and Yay for RECOVERY!

There are a ton of apps for whatever kind of phone you have that can count calories. I do it and its helped me a ton to ensure I am eating enough, and enough of the right things (protein, carbs, etc) to ensure I stay healthy and have the energy to push through my running/work out schedule. Its made me much more aware of what I am putting in my body and it allows me to go back and see what works best for fuel and what doesn't.

I don't count calories because it has led to some very bad thinking in the past. I try to just watch what I eat, only get a serving size (or smaller) at a time, and to be mindful of how much I am getting from each food group, etc. etc.
But, if I am really craving something, I'll eat it. Because I know from way too much experience that if I deny myself, I'll just end up binging for a day or more. So, it's because to have that one candy bar or ice cream cone now, rather than a full day of junk later. :)

If you actually sit down and calculate how many calories you need to hold/gain weight at your high activity level, it is shocking. Getting all of those calories from healthy food is a chore. But you can do it.

I am, however, sitting here shaking my head and finger at you for injuring BOTH of your legs!! Bad Janae! Bad Janae!

At the same time, so proud that you have realized this is your wakeup call and are going to do things the RIGHT way now!

I'm very active (but not as much as you! haha)and what helps me get cals in is eating a huge b fast to get me going (like 500-600 cals( everyday. I love my healthy fats (pb, avocado, etc.) and dessert every night! good luck girl!

Hey! Good news!!

I have tried to count calories before but I either get obsessive about it...try to restrict too much...or feel bad when I overeat...so I just don't. I do think it is a good idea to do it for a week just to get a baseline of what you are normally taking in. My personality is very extreme so if I start doing stuff like that I can slip into obsessive cal counting mode.
I really want to see a nutritionist.

Even though your injuries suck...it is a great opportunity to learn more about healthy eating/living. Awesome!
Looking fwd to more updates.

PS. Thanks so much for your sweet comments on my blog yesterday. Made my day :)

I've only ever counted calories in order to exemplify to others how much I eat. I've never done it longer than two days at a time and only half a dozen times in the last 10 years. It was somewhere around 6500/day back in high school and it's always been between 3-5000/day since.

I eat very much according to feel. If I'm hungry, I eat. Simple as that. As much as modern sports are moving more and more towards heart rate monitors, stats, calculations, formulas, and such, I prefer the old method of training by feel. If you feel hungry, eat. If you feel like something sweet, have something sweet. Endorphins and other exercise-induced chemicals heighten your desire for healthier foods, so your diet will change naturally. If you feel like going out and running 20 miles, do it. Who cares if the schedule says only 5. Our bodies are designed to tell us what it needs. The biggest obstacle is getting to the point of understanding each hint and clue.

I used to count calories down to every little detail. I got so sick of it after a while and realized I didn't really need to be counting them, plus I hate math :)

I'm glad I used to count calories because now I have an idea everyday about how many calories I'm getting without having to actually record it or obsessively track it.

I'm trying to get rid of calorie-counting in my life, and honestly I feel liek for MOST people it can get kind of obsessive, but I think in your case at least a few days of calorie-counting could give you a ballpark estimate of where you're at, then you can determine how much extra you probably need to eat on top of that? And ways to add it, of course. Sometimes it can be a little less problematic if you find out kind of a number of servings of certain kinds of food but I think in GENERAL it's good to mostly eat what you want when youw ant it, so I'm actually kind of jealous of your ability to do that ;)

sending you healing vibes :)

I do count calories. I do it daily, gets easy especially once you get going because you tend to eat similar stuff. I use My fitness pal on my iphone for keeping a running list. But you can also do it from the computer. myfitnesspal.com. It is great! anything not in there that you eat, you can add. It also keeps up a tally of your nutrients consummed and where that falls into what you require. Plus you enter all your states, your goals, exercise, etc...and I LOVE IT! I am full time, NP with a 4 year old and 45 minute commute one way...if I can keep up with it...anyone can! Keep me accountable

I don't count calories per meal, but if I am feeling sluggish or depleted, I will do a quick count to see how many I have had so far so I can make sure I get enough to fuel my swims, spins, and runs. I eat more according to feel than suggested calories, because when I was eating my "suggested amount" I always felt bloated and had stomach aches, so now I just go by how hungry I am. I used to count them all the time, every meal, which actually helped my math skills.. but that got tedious and excessive so now I just eat my tummy tells me to.

I try to count calories, but still end up eating a lot more than I feel I should, especially since I want to lose weight... then I end up beating myself up over the high number of calories I ate. I used to be able to stop when I reached a certain calorie amount, but I don't know... I need more self-control I guess. If I hadn't I wouldn't have gained the weight back, right? Anyway, the thought of not keeping track at all scares me, though...

I don't count calories but I do read nutrition labels and try to be aware of what I eat. I can't allow myself to worry about it because I overeat when I stress out so it has a reverse effect on me. I used to wish I had the willpower to restrict my calorie intake dramatically but now I'm just thankful I can find balance in my diet, even if I do go through phases where I slip up.

I'm so glad to hear you are recovering!! It's great that you are finding balance throughout this and I know you'll come back stronger than ever!

I used to count calories religiously. It's what helped me shed 35 pounds (although t15 of those are back on). I got to a burn out point though where eating just wasn't any fun any more...so much of a burden so I stopped.
Some weight has come back on and I know some of that is because I didn't listen to my body and just ate.
Right now I'm participating in a challenge at my gym and to earn points (to potentially win free stuff) we track our food on livestrong. I'm really liking it and I have a much more reasonable goal this time around.
I'm not sure if I'm going to continue after the challenge or not but I will definitley keep up practicing Intuitive Eating.

Great news that you're recovering! I used to count calories, and it would just frustrate me everyday whenever I was over what I set as "my limit." Eventually, I got out of this negative mindset, but sometimes, I do find myself adding calories in my head. I do sometimes count calorie estimates on long run days to make sure I'm getting enough in.

I used to count calories, but then I realized for me that counting isn't healthy. Plus- I believe that not all calories are created equal and that it isn't always about calories in vs calories burned. Instead I cut out all processed food out of my diet and eat when I'm hungry. One big thing that I have learned is that when 75% of your diet comes from plants (veggies, a little fruit), you NEED high calorie high nutrient foods in between to supplement. I've incorporated healthy fats like nuts (but not peanuts because they are a legume and not even a nut! tricky..), coconut oil or grapeseed oil for cooking, olive oil for raw foods, eggs, even bacon!

You are incredible and it's nice to see an example of an athlete who cares more about being healthy than her jean size. Thanks for being such a rock star!

I don't normally count calories. I'm tracking this week to see where I'm at versus where I need to be in a month when I crank up the mileage. But, I do like to check the nutrition facts on things so I can make informed choices when eating. You know restaurants can be tricky sometimes. It doesn't stop me from eating what I want, but I'm informed on what I'm eating.

I don't count calories, but I have a general idea at where I'm at. After years of torturing myself about everything thing, and having to know the calorie content of everything, I kinda memorized stuff.

If I do calorie counts though, it's unintentional and I try to stop myself. Mentally it just helps me more to not know. Plus, if everything I'm eating I know it nutritious to my body, then I don't think I should worry about how many calories there are.

I do not count calories, because like everyone else (pretty much) said, it can become an obsession. I estimate (very roughly) just so I know WHERE my calories came from, that way I know if I should add more healthy fats, carbs, veggies, etc.

You could seriously do a whole post about the negative side of counting calories (unless you're aiming to get more) just by gathering up all your comments. I think its so interesting how many women have done and then realized that it was harmful, then stopped. An inspiring thing!

I used to obsessively count calories (including sugar free gum, toothpaste, and breath mints). Not Pretty! For me counting calories leads to distructive behavior so I try to stay away from it and just eat by how I feel or what I crave. I am not so much a calorie counter. In the fall when I started working out to lose weight...I made a goal that each meal should be so many calories, etc. But I usually try to go with a range. I worry that if I stick with one number then I may get in trouble and start restricting even more. This has stuck around but since I am at a weight that I feel okay with and working out because I just love doing it...I do not necessarily feel like I have to eat the same amount every day. I splurge way toooo much lately...but its cool...its all worth it in the end :)

I hope you can get those bones strong. and I mean I can eat as much salad, breadsticks and fro-yo as it will take to help you out! LOVE YOU.

sad that I will not see you for a whole week :( but counting down the days till PUMP again!

Hi hungrygirl, I just discovered your blog and I am really enjoying it!

Stress fractures are the worst, and I'm so glad you've made the commitment to heal; it sounds like you're doing the right things.

Now about calorie counting. I am an avid and competitive runner as well, and I got into trouble with calorie counting about two years ago. It is a good way to lose weight, and let's just say I lost a bit too much and became slightly obsessive about counting them. As runners are already a little OCD/obsessive, I think it's an easy trap to fall into. I would avoid it like the plague and stick to eating what sounds good when it sounds good and stopping when you're satisfied.

Since your doctor recommended it, perhaps count them for one or two days and just east like you normally would-just to find out your general range. Then if it is "too low" you'll know to add a little. I doubt you need to cut back-from what I can tell you work out a ton even without running.

But seriously try to avoid it. I became a slave to calories and it was awful to try to get over. Yay for healthy running and eating! You can do it!

I usually always look at the calories content on packaged food and I like to look up nutrition fats for restaurants in advanced if they are available, but I don't log how many calories I eat in a journal or anything. I would really love to get tested to find out exactly how many calories my body burns at rest. Somedays I probably don't eat enough but I don't know how many calories I burn at rowing practice. My weight has stayed about the same so I assume I am eating enough.

I am a GRAZER! I like to eat little meals throughout the day.

I try to keep a rough estimate of my calories to make sure I don't go WAY over, but I generally try to eat when I'm hungry.

I count calories using sparkpeople.com, but livestrong is another great site! I had to go gluten-free when I was diagnosed with celiac disease a few years ago, and since I'm also a vegetarian, I felt off balance and icky for awhile--not enough protein, fat, and so on. Tracking helps me keep things in balance. And it's helped me figure out what foods help/hurt my workouts!

Back in the day I counted calories like a mad woman. Not so much anymore. I mean I always know where I'm at generally, but it's not an exact science anymore. Back in February I decided I wanted to lose a few pounds, so I started counting, measuring, and tracking everything with sparkpeople.com, but I got pissed after a few weeks because I wasn't losing anything, so I quit. lol These 5 lbs aren't going to kill me. (wanted to go from 130 to 125. Still very reasonable for my 5'3-1/2" frame)

first of all, i was at yogurtland last night and it was hoppin so i full expected to see you there! but didn't, it's ok the reason i went is bc every time you post about it i crave it even more! ok, about counting calories. mypyramid.gov has an eating plan for your age/weight/height/activity level. it will tell you approximate calories you should eat and where those calories should come from (grains, fruit, vegetables, meat, etc). it's not super specific but it does give suggested serving sizes and things like that. another thing is the 'lose it' app from the app store. i have it on my iPod and it is an extremely convenient way to track calories. you can make a plan (it's intended for weight loss but i think they have an option for maintaining your weight) and it will give you a calorie budget for each day. you put in what you ate, how much of it, and it will record your calories AND your exercise. if you are looking for a way to log calories i would definitely recommend it. it has restaurant foods on there too so even eating out at most places won't prevent you from counting calories. i hope this helps and i wish you luck on a speedy recovery!! <3

I never have counted calories in my life! Probably why I have gained weight the last 10 years....that and peri-menopause. I always enjoy cheese and milk, so I have never been concerned with calcium. And I am blessed to have been pretty healthy so I have always been regular as far as girlie things are concerned. I say if you are trying to gain weight, don't count calories, just be aware of what you are eating. Pile on the cheese! and greek yogurt. It is delish. Cut down on the candy and add more peanut butter! And eat some meat. A lean sirloin on the grill is amazing.

When I was overweight and trying to get my weight down I counted calories. I weaned myself off of that because I felt like I was starting to get crazy about it. Only recently I've started keeping track loosely to make sure that I'm getting enough to keep up with my training. I think it's good to keep track loosely to make sure you're filling your daily needs but I also think there's a thin line before it can get obsessive and unhealthy.

I use my fitness pal iphone app to keep track when I'm counting! It's a great resource.

I do count my calories, and it definitely helps me. When I don't count my calories and eat "intuitively", I consume about 200-300 more calories than I should per day. Thankfully, I know enough about food that I can keep up with my calories in my head (like out at a restaurant or something). I use myfitnesspal (both online and the app), and it is awesome. You can choose what you want to see in the breakdown - protein, sugar, fiber, etc. Counting calories is definitely not for everyone, but if you want to have an idea of what you are truly putting into your body (fat, carbs, protein, etc), you need to keep up with it. Once you do that, you see where you can make positive changes.

I also keep track of how many servings I've had from each of the food groups. I usually shoot for 6-7 servings of breads, 3-4 servings of veggies, 2-3 fruits, 3 dairy, and 2-3 lean meats/proteins.

After I get a good feel of how much I am eating I just start listening to my body and just make sure to eat good foods.

Being a competitive person, it was interesting to see if I could stick to a stricter diet (i.e. Lean pocket and peas for lunch) and handle Eating less calories... Needless to say, it did not work!! I felt too lightheaded and week and that whole phase probably lasted three weeks. Now I just eat healthy foods, making sure I eat a morning and afternoon snack. So, I did count calories for about 6 or 7 months last year - but I did because I was nearing the top end of the acceptable weight range (I was 122 lbs at 5'0" - a good 20 more than when I graduated college), even with running 20+ mpw.

I think since your goal is not to restrict, maybe just writing down what you eat, to get an idea of what food groups/nutrients are coming in. Because that is really the main issue, right? The types of foods and what vitamins, protein, fiber, etc, they contain.

I used to count calories when I was trying to lose the 10 pounds I gained in college. Since then I usually eat what I like, which has recently gotten a little out of hand (I feel groggy and yucky) so I keep a log. I like this idea a lot because it makes me think about what I'm putting in my body more and if I really need it. There are still days when I gorge myself, but I've gotten a lot better.

I don't regularly count calories. I have used daily plate or the free "fat secret" blackberry app to tally what I'm eating periodically for a day or two at a time... I'm not so much concerned with the calories as I am the protein & fiber. I just make sure I have breakfast with some kind of fiber to keep me full, I pack my own lunch which I try to fill with as many fruits/veggies as I can + greek yogurt, and we make healthy dinners (protein + veg). When you fill up on produce, that doesn't leave a lot of room for less healthy stuff. When I eat out, I don't worry about it because I eat well the rest of the time.

So I'd say my main goals are: PRODUCE (Strive for 5, thanks Wegmans); some kind of dairy (calcium and protein!); I shoot for at least 60 oz of water a day.
