Are we all weirdo's?

After school yesterday I took a quick break and went on over to the Costco to meet the Madre.  I don't like going to Costco by myself.  Billy had school and heaven forbid I do my favorite things at Costco alone: eat ridiculous amounts of samples, check out and smell all of the amazing bakery items, look at clothes, eat ice cream and buy mass amounts of produce.

She surprised me with a birthday week cupcake.  Chocolate with coconut frosting....heaven!  I always forget to take off my work keys and look like a nerd.

IMG_0652.JPG

I got some good stuff and I am excited to have a stocked kitchen again.

Then it was back to school for an open house until 9 p.m. It was a long day but fun at the same time.  Why do I enjoy being around annoying teenagers all day.....oh yeah, it is because I still am mentally an annoying teenager.

Is it weird that I made my students make a paper chain for a countdown to my birthday to hang up in the classroom so that they remember the important day?

photo.jpg

During lunch yesterday a co-worker came into the faculty lounge and practically screamed...."I have never seen someone eat that many vegetables at the same time, that is disgusting."  Everyone looked at me (yes, I am still that person that cares big time what others think about them), I turned red and then started feeling like I had to explain myself.....'but I eat a lot of normal food too like candy and sandwiches and tacos, I love vegetables and it takes a lot of food to fill me up...etc. etc. blah blah blah.'

She then went on to say, "If I ate that many vegetables I would be in the bathroom half the day."  30 minutes later of listening to her talk about what veggies do to her intestines she left.

I never said one word about what she was eating and how it effects my body, so why do people feel like they have to comment on my 'weird' eating habits?

Don't worry it didn't make me mad or anything but it left me thinking about WHY I don't like it when my co-workers notice what I eat.  Heck, I post pictures of my dinners and insane candy intake almost every day on the blog.   So, why do I love the comments from you guys about what I eat but not from my co-workers.......

******Oh, I know, I know, pick me.....it's because you guys are the same way.  Whether it is because you are a runner and understand the reason why I crave 14 bowls of cereal after a long run, or because you care about getting the max amount of nutrients everyday even if that means eating a bag of spinach every three days.

It is one more reason why I am obsessed with you.  We are all so alike.  We love our food and we are trying our hardest to fuel our bodies with good foods (and treats of course) to get us through our workouts and so we are able to perform at our best levels and feel our best.

Moral of the story: I am going to keep eating my large amounts of veggies and laugh my way until I am 110 years old still rocking the treadmill.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Do people comment on the food that you eat?  Do you feel like you have to defend yourself?

-My close friends and family know and love the fact that I am a crazy person about my food but co-workers etc. think I am a little off my rocker because I bring a tub of salad and 10 pieces of fruit rather than going to MickeyD's with them.  I feel like I do have to defend myself but from now on I will answer, 'it makes me feel good and happy and that is why I do it:)'

What is your favorite grocery store?

-Costco....it is cheap, close, awesomesauce, samplefilled and the best produce around.

What are your Friday night Plans????

-Date night with Billster @ PF Changs......what should I order?.

I think that THEY (the McD's eating crowd at your school) are the weirdos. You are doing amazing things with the body God gave you- feeding and working it as He intended!!

And, WOW, are those mountains in the back of your Cosco parking lot AMAZING!! I live in coastal GA, not even a HILL, ha ha!

Friday night plans include soccer practice for my son and then maybe a movie with the kiddos. Mark (dh) is on call tonight/all weekend so I am mostly flying solo. I've never been to PF Changs!

I wouldn't worry one bit about someone commenting on the amount of veggies you eat (or anything else you consume for that matter) If someone doesn't appreciate the health benefits of a big ol' bowl of vegetables that's their loss!!

Well, sorry that lady bothered you. =/ I know you have heard it before but I am sure she is just jealous. And she had no clue how to fuel her body for the type of running and exercise you do. And the more healthy stuff you eat the more you crave it! Just like the more sweets and crap you eat the more you crave it. So phooey on her. Please don't ever feel the need to defend yourself for being healthy!

The pic of Costco makes me homesick...we have Sams here. I'll go check it out next weekend. And the mountains are gorgeous. Do you ever run in them? I picture you running in the mountains like it were a field of flowers, skipping and hopping and floating around....is that wierd? i just had a daydream about you dance-running in a mountain, with the expression you had in yesterday's video! HA!

Happy Friday!! The Hubs and I are going to dinner while LB goes to a Valentine's Day dance at his school. So what if he's in kindergarten? We need a date night!

Ah...same here! Sometimes I'll bring things like Froot Loops for lunch and people always have to comment. Or random things like an entire bag of salad and I'll eat the whole thing without dressing--just some salsa and veggies on top. At least we are being healthy! What works for one person, doesn't always work for another...besides, the only thing I like at McDonalds is ice cream and that doesn't count as lunch! (Not that I've ever done that before...hehe)

Grocery stores....hmmm I LOVE super target for many reasons:
1. they have a starbucks inside...need i say anymore?
2. they have clothes, movies, magazines, art supplies, makeup, fun seasonal things like VALENTINES STICKERS, etc.
3. PLUS their produce is usually pretty good and i can get all of my groceries there. You're starting to convince me to get a costco membership though...I think it would save me a lot of money to buy my veggies and fruit in bulk since I eat so many of them!

P.F. changs...hmmm haven't been there in awhile...Their sesame chicken is usually pretty stellar! What do you usually order there?

And ah....bless your heart for going back to school after work for an open house...that would be rough! Leave work, only to come back later on. When I'm done, I like to be done for the day! haha.

And plus also...LOVED the paper birthday chain! I'm tempted to make one for my wedding. Does it matter that it is not for like 8 more months?! That sucker would be like 4 feet long...apartment decorations here I come!

I freaking hate it when people make fun of what I eat. I was a vegetarian for 7 years and people would always make fun of me and say stuff like, "Well I'm going to eat double meat now just to cancel you out." Get over yourself, peeps! Mind your own beeswax!

Um, Trader Joe's has to top my list of best grocery store.

Aaaaaand, no exciting 'date night' for us. I have to work at 7 a.m. tomorrow so it'll be a night of dinner at home and snugglin' on the couch (and I am totally NOT complaining).

Oh yes...I love meh veggies! I could eat them all day long. Good thing I don't live alone, or else I'd probably live completely off veggies, bread and dessert!

People definitely comment on what I eat:
"How can you eat salad so much?"
"Is that stuff REALLY good?"
"WOW! You eat a lot of peanut butter!":P
"You eat quite frequently don't you?" (especially since I'm trying to gain weight!)
I try not to let it bother me, because I know that in general, I fuel myself really well!

I have the SAME problem! At school, everyone gives my mass amount of veggies funny looks but they don't know how many bars of chocolate and quinoa-hummus-balsamic-raisin bowls I go through a day. It's like "sorry for getting some nutrients in, I'll make sure to eat JUST the chocolate and not the salad too".

It makes me self-conscious too, but we will be laughing our way into old age and running marathons when we are 100:)

My friday night plans = making a yummy deliciousness dessert for Indulgence Friday on the bloggity blog! And poss going to see Hairspray:)

People always comment on the amount of fruit I can eat...I can't believe that a pint of strawberries ISN'T a serving for other people :)

Best grocery store? I love Harris Teeter!

Date night? What's that? :) We have a baby so we don't do crazy stuff like date night, unless watching recorded TV shows and eating ice cream together counts. Which is totally does :P

This post really strikes a chord with me. I have had this problem too - always with female coworkers.

It got to the point once where I wanted to hide my lunches, and my lunches weren't even that crazy! At the time I was going through a soup and salad phase, not crazy at all!

These women are big time insecure and your healthy eating habits highlight their own grossness. I think that's why they go on the defensive.

Fav grocery store is definitely Trader Joes!

IGNORE HER girl! You eat amazingly and we NEED all that spinach to make us run well!:) I get that kind of thing ALL THE TIME, but people don't see half of what I eat, so they can't judge. And hell we all know that you love candy anyway!!

You're right- I love how we're all the same and understand each other!! It's AMAZING!! Love ya girl:)

I like with college roommates that eat like....well, college students. And I don't. I make Costco trips with my mom every couple weeks to stalk up, and my dinner always looks like a load of veggies and fruit. And they look at me funny. But I'm over it, because I love the stuff!

Hi Janae! People like that are just jealous and envious that they are not in shape and are eating McDonald's instead of broccoli. It's their defense mechanism. I'm like you and would never comment on someone's food in an obnoxious way but some people can't help themselves. Such as life. Let it go in one ear and out the next!

I have a little favorite market near my apartment called Gourmet Garage. I also love Whole Foods and Trader Joes but don't frequent on a regular basis.

OMG, PF Chang's chicken lettuce wraps are THEBOMB.COM. Seriously, I love them so hard.

I get comments on how I eat, sometimes. I have a feeling when I home, and CHOOSE to eat green smoothies and healthy food instead of hitting up Wendy's, I'm going to get a bunch of weird looks.... Haha.

Keep doing what you do. You're awesome, and they should know that.

Gah! I have this same issue at work! The other day I had a salad and sweet potato topped with black beans and someone said "You aren't a vegetarian are you?!?!?!" and No, I'm not. I just don't see the need to eat meat at every meal. And I get a lot of snacking comments "Eating again I see" Yeah, carrots and celery.

But they are mostly from the unhealthiest ones in they group, so I think they are trying to deflect attention away from their 10 piece buckets of chicken!

Wow! I totally get that! I hate eating in the teacher's lounge when I have something unusual/healthy because EVERYONE feels the need to comment on it. In like a GROSS WHERE'S THE MEAT kind of way. I'm not even vegetarian!!

I know it's lame, but on the days I don't want to deal with it, I just eat in my classroom. And I'm normal! Well-adjusted! People like me! That makes me sound like a such a LOSER!! Hahahaha. :)

P.S. You're awesome.

When I first started weight watchers the people close to me who knew I was changing the way i would eat would really support me because they knew how hard I was working. As the weight came off- and I got closer to goal and I became skinnier they would then say things like "oh come on you can eat that" and now they pressure me to eat bad things again. Its super annoying because its like a double standard- when I was overweight it was okay for me to eat fruit and veggies like nuts but now that I'm thinner I'm not allowed?? no unacceptable haha. Whoops sorry went on a little rant...

Moral of the story- We shouldnt care about those people- We should just worry about ourselves :)

The only comments I get about the food I eat, at least at work, are positive. Like, "Wow, that smells good." And then I start to tell them about how healthy it is and they walk away. Hmph. When I was in HS, though, a Bob Evans co-worker commented that all my salads must keep me "regular." Gross!

I don't have a fave grocery store because we don't have cool grocery stores. We alternate between Kroger and Meijer. Eh.

Tonight, I'll be going to one of them. We're super cool like that. I'll also be eating a delicious turkey sandwich from Jimmy Johns.

P.S. Is it weird that I wondered if I could ship those cupcakes to you? I swear I'm not psycho!

We have Wegmans around here - they are grocery stores that are awesome! I love them and hope I never have to move someplace where there isn't one.

I have no idea what we are doing tonight. I know we are going snowshoeing tomorrow and I am running!

Sorry to hear she bothered you.. As if she did that!! Since when did vegetables become disgusting?
Good for you that you are going to continue eating those veggies :)

My close friends and family know that at times I am very picky with what I put in my body (other times not so much). I got a lot of slack from my best friends for a few years when we would go out to eat, but it's better now. I'm also better now too and not as hardcore (or high-strung? lol) but YES I still try to eat very healthy.

I'll probably be going to Costco tonight :)

I think most people comment because they're comparing what they eat to what you're eating, and they feel guilty, because they think they should be eating more veggies or whatever (for good or bad reasons). I did that when I wasn't eating healthy, and I've experienced it from people now that I do eat more healthy.

Bah! I can't believe that lady! I've had coworkers comment to me when I don't partake of the pot luck stuff they might bring in to the office. One coworker went so far as to call me anorexic! Rude. Then I felt like I HAD to explain myself....I told her that if I eat crap then I feel like crap...I didn't add that she should "stuff it," but I really wanted to.

I need to get a membership to Costco...With 4 people in the house and the way we love veggies it's almost a waste not to go to Costco.

My husband and I are actually doing pizza night friday (using your pizza dough recipe...THANK YOU...We do it EVERY Friday) and we're going to snuggle and watch movies after the kids go to bed. It's been a stressful week.

It drives me nuts when someone at work has to walk into the breakroom, stop, and stare at my food and then ask me a million questions about it. Really, it's my food--leave me alone! Plus, I'm trying to read at the same time, so it's really annoying.

Bud and I are watching "Despicable Me", eating chicken piccata and salad for our Friday night.

Yes I have been picked on because of my food, I tend to eat the same things because I have an uneasy stomach at times so when I find something that I love and it works for me then I tend to stick to it! lol
I usually go to super-Walmart for my groceries because its one-stop shopping for everything lol I'm not sure if there is a Costco in Charlotte, but I'm thinking of checking into it, you rave so much about it!
My Friday night plans- cook dinner and build my bedroom furniture, everything has come in except my bed, so that will be the extent of my lovely evening!

Tonight, I'm tagging along with my best friend and her boyfriend to his hometown to watch his bro play a basketball tournament. We're all friends, so I'm looking forward to catching up with everyone there!

People at my work ALWAYS comment on my food! I usually bring a whole loaf of bread (or package of wraps), a small bag of spinach, a package of turkey, etc. to work on Monday and make sandwiches every day for lunch throughout the week.

Well, it NEVER fails that every day at lunch someone walks into the kitchen to microwave their frozen meals and makes a comment about my "sandwich shop" and how "funny" it is that I make my lunch every day. Why is it funny that I enjoy making fresh sandwiches instead of eating frozen meals or spending money getting fast food from across the street? I've never understood...

I think people like that make those comments because they are intimidated and insecure about their own UNhealthy choices, like eating at McD's every day. I would just ignore it and be happy that I choose to fuel my body with nutrients that allow me to push myself through tough workouts and that make me feel good!

I wish we had a Costco, I am always jealous of your giant bags of broccoli :-)

B. People feel the need to comment on what I eat ALL. THE. TIME. As a dietitian, I can't win. If I'm eating healthy food, people will say "That figures you would eat something like that" IF I"m eating something unhealthy they will say "Are you sure you should eat that? You're a dietitian..."

C. I love grocery shopping at Meijer - it's a midwest thing.

D. Friday night - low key with the kiddo and hubby once he gets back from his track meet.

It got to the point where I couldn't eat in our staff lounge without getting some snide comment and getting annoyed so I started eating my lunch in my office. I suppose it gets lonely sometimes, but I can eat in peace and I get to leave 30 minutes earlier since I eat so much faster when I'm not talking!

People say things to me all the time at work about my food! It does make me a little self-conscious, and I actually work on trying to bring more 'normal' looking things as snacks now (veggies and almonds rather than a creepy brown-green hemp smoothie). I know that I don't have to do that, but I hate it when both my co-workers and patrons at the gym where I work feel it ok to say 'What are you EATINGGGGGGGGGGG?'

My real theory is that our 'weird' healthy food is just calling to their attention what they know they should be eating, and it makes them self-conscious. They would rather stay in a bubble where everyone eats junk food all the time, and because everyone does it makes it ok.

Where I live we have Sam's Club, not Costco, but I love it. They have the same giant bags of broccoli! I also love the giant bags of bell peppers!

I am working late tonight, so nothing fun except some tv time later. But tomorrow we are going ice skating!

Uggh, I have to defend my eating habits everyday! Especially when I am CONSTANTLY snacking. And my snacking is bananas, oranges, a bag of veggies, and yogurt. And work friends only see what you eat during the day so they think you are just crazy healthy. But really I go home, put on the bachleor, take out a tub of ice cream and mash up peanut butter cups and put them in there and I'm ready for a feast.

Costco is the greatest invention. Ever.

You're not alone. I eat healthy probably about 75 or 80% of the time and most of that is when I'm at work eating breakfast and lunch. I always get comments about how I "eat so healthy" and feel I need to say "oh, well I eat cupcakes too!". I don't know why we feel the need to defend ourselves for eating properly and having the willpower to eat a salad instead of a burger most of the time.

My favorite store is Wegmens. I think they only have it on the east coast, but it is amazing.

Have fun tonight. After work I'll be doing a Jillian Michaels workout DVD, probably cursing it out for being so difficult and involving so many squats, then probably watching the ten thousand episodes of Criminal Minds that I have on DVR. ha ha

My fave grocery stores are Martin's and Costco :)

You sure have gorgeous views in Utah!! I would love to visit out there, I've never been!

p.s. I gave you an award on my blog. You can play along if you would like. No pressure :)

Okay, not coolio. You eat as many veggies as your little heart desires. :)

When I'm at work, I always complain about how hungry I am. Usually because I'm always hungry. But it's usually welcomed with a "Yeah, but if you eat normal things like pizza and french fries you wont' be so hungry."

Whatever. Enjoy your clogged arteries.

As for my Friday evening, I'm road tripping to Wisconsin to visit a friend. Enjoy your date night!

People (especially unhealthy coworkers who never exercise or touch any fruits/veggies) comment on how many vegetables I eat and what I don't eat. I curtly tell them "I'm well aware of the content of my lunch" and glare at them like I might kill them.

It kind of stops it.

I love Publix! They have great buy one get one deals. Last week, I spent $50 & saved $40!

Friday night plans: the boy's softball game and dinner...after running 10...yay!!! I can't hardly wait to get out of work! Mmm..enjoy PF Changs!

Like when someone says "whoa, what the mess are you eating?" I say.. "Its called broccoli, would you like me to spell that?" (they know im not really mean but omg it can be annoying)!!! Have a great Friday!!

They are notorious for "I think you are in the kitchen more than in your office" or "you are always eatting" (I eat every 3 hours) Then they make fun of my "small, portioned out containers" (yeah, that's why ya'll are BIG and UNHEALTH) I dont care. I let them make their remarks and just continue on with what i'm doing.

P.S. you would love working here..it's for a produce company!! yayaya cheap produce!

Janae, she had her full cup of hater-ade yesterday! That was just plain rude. Don't worry about her. You're right, do what makes you happy! People comment on my "healthy" food all the time. It's almost like it's not normal for me to eat that way. Which is sad. I say if I eat crap all the time I run like crap. And it tastes good to me. I also get "You're eating AGAIN??" That one does get to me sometimes. But I know what my body needs.

I love Trader Joe's! They have sunflower butter that is my replacement from peanut butter (I'm allergic to nuts). It's soooo good. And their produce prices are great!

Friday night plans? Not much, think I'm getting a lovely little cold. Home with the hubster - movies & dinner in bed!

I just stuck a batch of black bean brownies in the oven and I cant wait. You go girl--you keep eating your broccoli and don't worry about people's comments or stares! I sure don't. I don't even care what my extended family thinks!

Our Friday night--includes dinner with my pa-in-law--He takes us most of the time to a fish buffet---with a rockin' salad bar, but tonight it is pizza and I'm pumped! Hugs you cutie--go have a great day---E

Janae your blog is the sweetest, and you are a doll. I hear the same crazy things from my coworkers about what I eat, and my diet mainly consists of fruits, veggies, and lots and lots of candy just like yours. It can be difficult for people to understand what a trained body feels like when they do not have one.

So hold your head up girl! Obviously the veggies are doing you good right now. If Americans would only focus on themselves and what they are putting in their own bodies, over one third of our country wouldn't be obese.

Oh and the view from your Costco parking lot is AMAZING! I'm jealous!

AND they bring lunch to share with each other like three times a week and always go, "oh, Diana we WOULD share, but this has MEAT IN IT!" Like they're trying to lure me out of it or something haha. Veggies are delicious, I make no apologies. And I'm with you, I could eat my body weight in broccoli.

There is a guy at my work that always lectures me on the Boca burgers I eat and how they have "so many chemicals."

This guy is extremely overweight and it bothers me to no end. Why does he feel he can judge what I eat when it's visually apparent he doesn't eat the right stuff?

I just always answer him, "you know my body thrives on chemicals!" and then I'll take a bite and make a yummy noise to be silly. I don't know how else to respond.

He's a nice guy too, so I don't want to be rude.

- Yep, all the time I get looks and comments about my spinach salad that I eat everyday, Personally I dont think they are really mad at you, they are actually mad at themselves, after eating 2500 calories from McDonalds and they not not even full, that not including the mass amount of fat on top of it, so in their own self pity, they slam on the person that they fully know that they should be eating like us. Ya, society has become this way, its our fault they eat so badly.

We are ELITE athletes, all of us, doesnt matter your skill level, once you cross a finishline at any race, you are an athlete, can we continue to be elite athletes, we train while others watch TV, heck we even train in front of the TV, so we can "be part of the TV conversation at work" but we are still training, we eat to fuel for training, we all know that eating McD's before a workout is going to kill the performance of that workout, not to mention we will want to burn those calories off. We know how to fuel for performance, we have studied this and we know we are right, so again is our fault that the rest of the world is mad at us.

so when we are 110, on the porch, in our running shoes, we will be going over our race medals, comparing stories, and have tall tales to tell the great, great, great, great, great grandkids

So you dont need to defend yourself, because you already know your doing it the right way and they are mad that they dont have the mental fortitude to follow your example

I think it's just because they are insecure. Just my opinion.
I love HEB. It's a grocery store in Texas. I miss it so much from the summer. It's like Costco/Maceys/Smiths. Loved it!

What I hate most is when people say "you're so tiny..you don't need to eat that way."

Like 1. I am not eating to be tiny, I am eating veggies because I am trying to ward off cancer/disease/give my body what it needs and
2. Maybe I am "tiny" because I DO eat this way!

I hate it when people comment on what I eat, so if I bring something that I'm sure will gain comments I do my best to not let anyone else see. A lot of the stuff I eat the people around here think is disgusting, so I hate it when people see what I'm eating and say "What is THAT!?" and then I have to go on to explain "It's butternut squash soup" or "It's quinoa casserole" or something... then I have to go on to explain WHAT quinoa is is and yadda yadda. On Sunday I went out to eat with my mom and dad where my mom and I split a bison burger and a veggie sandwich, then we got gelato. We went to Sam's after where I got a sample of pita chips and hummus and my dad looked at me and asked "What are you eating now?" Gee, dad, thanks for making me feel guilty about my sample. I didn't bother getting any more samples after that.

It's my first time commenting but I have been stalking your blog for a couple months now and feel that we would be best friends if we didn't live a couple states apart!

I had to comment on this because I get people constantly critiquing my eating habits or my weight. I am small, only 5'3" and around 115-120 but it's mostly muscle...from running and weights :) People always feel the need to tell me I'm too skinny or they "hate" me because I'm so small. It's really discouraging and rude! I never comment on their weight, so why is it ok for them to comment on mine? Same goes with what I eat. It sucks :( But I secretly think in my head, "Well if you didn't eat like a pig, maybe you wouldn't weigh 300 pounds! So there!" Very mature, I know! :)

It's gotten better lately because most people now just know how I eat and they are used to it, but there will be people who will call you out or try to bring you down. In my opinion, it's very inconsiderate to discuss someone's food choices, especially while they are eating. I shop at several different grocery stores, but my newest find is a place called Natural Grocers and they have really cheap prices on staple items. We have no plans tonight, so maybe a movie date! Your birthday is in 2 days!

I think it's rude for people to comment negatively on another person's food that they are eating! Those people have no filter...they can't help what comes out of their mouth. It could also be that they are feeling a bit self-consious about the bad food choices that they've made and try to justify that by picking someone elses choices apart to make them feel better.

I really like Whole Foods store and could spend most of the day walking around checking things out.

You are awesome, don't let that bother you one bit!
A few of my co-workers are somewhat similar and my superior calls me "Slim" and says I need to gain weight... she recently got gastric bypass and a decent amount of my other co-workers are serevely overweight. I certainly don't need to gain weight by any health standards but her calling me "Slim" is relative to the people I work with. It's a touchy issue because if she were to say anything about my weight and what I'm eating I really can't do anything, but if the tables were turned I would seem like an awful person. I basically try to ignore it all and do my thang!
But I'm not sure why people feel they need to comment on what others eat. I tell people their food looks good, but not if I think it looks disgusting. I think that when people take issue with what you eat it's because they have their own issues with food. There is nothing wrong with being healthy, so don't let get to you.
Hooray for your birthday week! Have a great weekend and eat all of the veggies you want, of course alongside of your birthday treats!

I had one co worker say " When you get pregnant, I hope you get FAT." It was in a joking matter, but I was super hurt by that. A lot of times I feel self conscious at the amount that I eat too. It takes a lot to fill me up too! I know that even though I have some fat to lose, I am much healthier than a lot of people that I know. I think needing to eat a lot, often is a testament to your metabolism. I know the more I work out and the healthier that I eat, the hungrier that I am throughout the day.

People make fun of me for eating ridiculous amounts of vegetables sometimes too but mostly they find it endearing. i mean, back home my friends are all sort of healthy-eating weirdos like me (in a different way slightly but still) but here at college more of them are more meat&potatoes, fast-food types so they can't quite fathom eating a huge salad twice a day or anything, but they dont' really judge me. and honestly i make fun of myself for it. because i eat a lot of vegetables. and it amuses even me when I somehow get through 1.5 pounds of salad in a day... Pretty much I tell people that I'm eating their vegetables for them ;)

I feel the same way. Last week I was asked why I didn't just eat some of the food they have in the employee lounge (all yummy cooked food). I just smiled and said I am trying to control what I eat.

But that was half truth. Truth is I have to pay 20 bucks a paycheck to eat that, when I already spend that on weekly groceries. And the other truth is - they have way toooo much stuff I should only eat once or twice a week. Whatever girl, what works for you is what you should do.

I always feel I have to explain myself when I have family staying over because my breakfast usually consists of a banana or strawberries, and some fiber one cereal. Not the yummy kind - the rabbit food looking kind. But it makes me feel like I started the day out right & I feel full and ready to conquer the day.

Next time, look her up and down & tell her you're trying to prevent clogged arteries. ;-) Love you bestie

I regularly get called *Health Nut* by friends and family members. At first I felt the intense need to defend myself and assure them that I did indeed eat sugar and butter sometimes. Now I just embrace my role and hope that my health rubs off on people. There's only one other person in my office (my boss) and his idea of lunch is tossing some peanuts in his diet coke. He knows better than to make fun of me. :)

There's a weird food culture in Utah. Since there's a good amount of people that don't drink, they eat instead. I always joke that there should be a Biggest Loser Utah edition. You are doing healthy things for your body every day by eating nutrient packed foods and working out so hard. People that knock it are just jealous, or just afraid to try an active lifestyle and fail. Don't take it personally.

I eat "Paleo," which is an old school caveman diet. It cuts out all of your favorite stuff, but I really enjoy the plain, clean, meat/veggie/fruit/nut diet. I get a lot of clients telling me that cavemen only lived to 16 or even my doctor appalled that I don't eat any grains. But it's all about listening to your body and fueling for your lifestyle.

I love Costco too. I go through an entire turkey breast, a 3lb bag of spinach, a 5.5lb bag of frozen veggies, and a 3lb bag of berries every week. I don't know what I would do without that incredible store! You should check out the White Linen spaghetti sauce, it's incredible.

ah the touchy subject for me...yes almost every day if I eat in front of people other then Bill and my 2 kids. People will make comments about the food I eat: veggies and fruits always. At restaurant it is a real pain. Even my own parents make comments and they made me cry during the holidays and I am 42 yrs old!. If we go to friends house for BBQ I bring my own food. I almost hide to fix my plate and to eat because they tend to stare at me..bad enough they think I am weird because I eat the proper way : fork in the left hand! It sucks. I wish they would just all leave me alone.

People comment on what I eat sometimes and I do feel like I have to defend myself because like you I care what people think and just want them to like me! It's silly but it's me, oh well! I love Publix, I think it's a Southern thing, they have amazing bogo's and it's really nice! I also love Trader Joe's but am without one in FL so I stock up whenever I travel somewhere there is one! My plans include laundry, baking, tv, packing, and blogging! So exciting! I love PF Chang's order some lettuce wraps for me!and I'll eat a red velvet cupcake for your birthday! By the way the mountains behind you gorgeous!

Wow, this post really ruffled my feathers. I think it was SO RUDE of that co-worker to comment on your food!!!! You are the one who is taking care of your body, eating good stuff to fuel your runs and even if she doesn't know that about it, it's just plain downright rude to say anything like that. Everybody thinks it OK to eat a supersized Combo Meal #5 from a fast food restaurant, but if you see somebody eating veggies...stop the presses!! Call the police! UGH, I hate that.

I got alot of that from people when I was vegetarian. Lots of comments about my food and when I was pregnant with my 2nd child I was vegetarian and that really pissed alot of people off. And they told me about it. Why do people do that???

Okay, i'll calm down now. Fav grocery store is Trader Joe's (love their natural peanut butter and almond butter). And we have no plans for tonight!

Have a great Friday!

I'm always defending what I eat during lunch! People don't think I eat enough and always ask how I can run with eating so little. What they don't know is that I eat mini-meals throughout the day and lunch is merely a snack for me, not a meal. I try to explain this but it's so frustrating.

That is a great perspective to have--now, who is the "annoying teenager": your coworker. Immature!

But I keep wondering why you have to stay late at school all the time? Or sometimes? My school never does that except for parent conferences, so I keep wondering why?? Not fun!

This is for sure a topic we can all relate to.

I am self-conscious about grocers comments when they are checking me out. They'll be like "what is all this squash for? fall decorations?" and I'm like no.... I'm going to stuff that in my belly...

I once worked at a place where there was a cupcake and pizza celebration every week for some birthday or other event. It became pretty evident I wasn't eating much of their food besides a swipe of frosting here or there, and I recieved some aggressively rude comments.

Your coworker is way out of line. way out of line. she clearly was trying to embarrass you by calling it disgusting.

Okay it is so funny you posted about this. There is a girl at my work that comments EVERYDAY that we work together on what I am eating. So annoying. Drives me crazy and I always vent to my husband about it. I don't know why it bugs me either but its uncomfortable. Its probably because everyone at my work eats out everyday so I'm the odd ball.

I don't have a Costco card because I can't eat that much food with just Randy and I but I love going with my mom! MMM samples!

People comment because they are insecure themselves- they know they should be eating healthier and you and your vegetables are just a big in-your-face reminder that they don't like. I'm sure your school's biology teacher won't criticize you!

I also think teachers spend all day "noticing" what kids are doing and making comments they forget to turn that off when they're around adults (I teach high school as well).

hmmm I am going grocery shopping tonight for veggies, maybe I'll go to costco. Thanks for the idea!

I get the same grief from coworkers too. I think it is because I am so fit. I don't think they understand how much work it is to nourish an athletic body. Plus, if they tried my veggielicious diet, they would probably feel 1,000% better than they do on the McDonald's one.

I get a lot of similar comments. I have GI issues and am also in the process of recovering from disordered eating habits, so not only do I often crave strange combinations, but eating balanced meals while I'm at school can be difficult as there's a lot of food ("normal food") that my body simply cannot handle.

I normally try and brush it off. I run, strength train, and cross train, whereas most of the people who make those comments to me do not, so they don't understand that sometimes all I want is a big bowl of spinach and mashed potatoes! After all, I can't expect to bulk up living off of pizza and chicken patties. They're just silly.

Hi Janae!! Omgosh I HATEEEEE when that happens! I can relate to you too, because I'm very thin (I have an overactive thyroid and without going into detail, I have to work very hard to keep weight on....btw not as fun as it sounds..) Anyways, I wouldn't say that I 'love' veggies, but I enjoy them because they make me feel great! Again, while I don't LOVE healthy food, I do LOVE knowing that I'm eating healthy. However, I am a university student and so I eat in a giant dining commons. I feel like I always get stares from people when I go to the salad bar, rather than eat an ice cream waffle for dinner. I just don't really want to load up on greese and I can totally feel the stares when I dont eat live everyone else.

Good for you for not snapping back and keeping your calm. I never know what to say...I generally just get red and say something oh-so-poetic like "yeaaah". Good luck!!!

That is really annoying! I've had "friends" in the past who comment on what I eat when I eat healthier things than they do, and used to constantly make fun of my running and called me insane for running every day, or crazy for running a marathon (and not insane/crazy in a good way). I think people who try to put you down are usually doing it to make themselves feel better - notice the people that make comments are the ones eating the bad food, or not exercising/have a healthy lifestyle. So if it makes them feel better, they can say what they want. We'll be the ones still running at 110 years old!! :)

Tonight is date night with my bf - I'm surprising him by taking him to a really nice seafood restaurant for dinner and then an Italian place for fun coffee drinks and dessert after! So excited! Enjoy PF Changs - everything is awesome - you MUST start with some chicken lettuce wraps!

This used to happen to me in college constantly! It became very frustrating and I hated it. Nowadays, it doesn't happen as much, but people do take notice of how MUCH I eat and that makes me self conscious. They always say "wow! you ate all of that! well, i guess you can because you'll run it all off." Then they go continue on telling me about how they have such a slow metabolism and I'm really blessed with a fast one, etc. The truth is, I run a lot. I don't think I would be able to eat as much if I sat on my butt every day. Anyway, I can empathize.

For a bit I ate none of those... like about 2 years. And I don't drink alcohol at all and not for religious reasons. I feel like I am constantly needing to explain. Before I used to eat like you do! LOTS of LOTS of things! And I was (am) skinny skinny. Lots of activity will do that for ya ;-)

You should have told her that you have some sort of life threatening disease, and eating mass amounts of vegetables is prolonging your life expentency. Not only would she feel bad, but she would never question your veggie eating habits again.

I have a brother-in-law who is always commenting on what I eat. Like the other night for example (My sis watches my baby when Husband goes to work) when I picked up my Little C, he was like, "So are you staying for dinner?" and before I could answer was like, "Oh wait, we don't eat diet food around here, so your probably not." Nice, eh? Gotta love those in-laws. :)

Fortunately my co-workers never comment on my food. But I'm sure they are questioning the 5 clementines that are sitting on my desk right now. Haha.

b) i swear i eat a lot, lot, LOT of peanut m&ms behind closed doors, i'm just afraid you'd think i was weirder if you saw me eat just candy for lunch

c) why are you trying to make me feel bad for liking vegetables!?

d) should i eat my lunch in a bathroom stall tomorrow?

Oh snap moment. I am always getting questioned on what I eat. I used to have class every Thursday from 4:30 to 7:00. My lunch was at 10:45 so needless to say I'd be starving, and would always bring carrots&hummus and yogurt. EVERY FLIPPING WEEK the instructor would comment about how much I eat, how I was always eating, he wished he could eat all the time like me and not get fat, etc. Meanwhile everyone else was eating fast food! I finally flipped out on him and told him to stop talking about what I ate, which was followed by a really awkward silence with him telling me he was just kidding and me snapping "whatever" and turning away. I still can't believe I did that but he really got under my skin! I'm glad I am not the only one who gets this crap from people. I find its mostly when people are uncomfortable with their own choices, like "oh man I'm over here eating fries and look at you being all healthy"...I never know what to say, and always feel that weird need to "defend" myself too....

HA! I read the first comment and had to go back and look at the picture again. I was so focused on the cupcake that I totally missed the amazing mountains in the background!

I'm not the picture of health, but I have always loved salad and veggies. I had a coworker tell me that it was unhealthy to eat vegetables for so many meals, that I needed more red meat in my diet. I couldn't help it--I asked him if red meat was how he kept his girlish figure, and seeing how he weighs about 290lbs he got mad a me and walked away. Ooops.

Ignore her. Never ever ever feel embarrassed or like you have to explain/defend your actions and choices. You have a dedication and a commitment to yourself that people like your coworker will never understand. If she wasn't eating crappy food, vegetables wouldn't make her body sick or uncomfortable. We are not engineered to run off of Big Macs and Hamburger Helpers.

My Friday night plans include snuggling the little blonde furball and blog stalking until Jason comes home from work (2am! Boo!). Slippers, puppy, pajamas, hot chocolate, laptop and Netflix!!

Don't worry about the veggie haters- I had my fair share of experiences with them, too, at my summer job. Everyone always ordered out and looked at me like I had four heads whenever I plunked my salad and snacks down to munch on while they scarfed down 2 dollar Chinese good. My lunch table also gives me some pretty weird looks for the massive amount of carrots and, pretzels, cheese, and salads that I eat, but I get by by reminding myself that my arteries are probably a lot cleaner than theirs, and that I am going to one day be like popeye and sprout massive muscles from all the salad I eat (if only...). Stay strong, and keeping eating that broccoli!!!

People ALWAYS comment on what I eat... at the beginning, when I was still getting used to all the eating healthy thing, I would get really embarrassed and annoyed... Now, I just look at what they're eating and how they look like and that alone answers them. Mean, right? Oh well. lol

I just found your blog and think it's wonderful!
: ) I'm a vegetarian runner and I get comments about what I eat and how much I run all the time. It gets old and yes, I often feel I have to defend myself and it bothers me too.
I'm currently training for my first 50 mile ultra in April. I told that to one of my coworkers and he said that was "stupid". I didn't have words to respond. Someone always has something to say, don't they?
Ultimately, you're making good choices for you and your body. Keep eating those veggies and keep on running! : )

people pick on me for my eating too, it's annoying. I don't defend myself usually. I am also healthier than all of them too.

I am a high volume eater, I keep bags of frozen veggies in the office freezer for when I need them. people think it's weird.

they pick on me when i'm healthy or when I splurge. It's none of their business I say. I HATE unsolicted work comments, especially over food. there is 1 man in the breakroom who works in another division that loves to give me pearls of wisdom. UGH

I ate a HUGE salad beast, a half of a really big sweet potato, about 1/2-3/4 cup of broccoli AND some leftover corn bread from a few days ago. You know what? I was not hungry until almost dinner time!! Just by watching me eat a salad for lunch almost every day my almost 4 year old now wants to eat salad AND THAT is why it is awesome to eat good food! Because the kids you teach and my kids see us doing it (in your case they hear you talk about it and might see you) and think that if she does it it might be worth doing. You talk the talk AND walk the walk! Amen sister!

Your a lot nicer than me then - I would have 'socked' her in the face (your coworker)...but I'm impulsive like that? ;)

Pretty bad when Vegetables can't be considered "normal food" - just roll your eyes and BE YOU!
