My foam Roller

I wanted to talk about my foam roller today.

Actually, I wanted to pay a tribute to him today.

If you think stretching and foam rolling is for sissies than it is time for you to change.
IMG_2575.jpg
Doesn't it look like heaven is shining its light on him.  Oh, and I don't know how that candy got there.
Mom I may have stolen those from your pantry yesterday.

I thought I would include a little instructional video to show you a few of my favorite ways to use it..

Please don't make fun of me.  That would just be cruel.

He is always there for me whether in sickness or in health.  Thank you foam roller for spending so much one on one time with me.

Don't forget to enter my giveaway here....it is a short one.

Also, enter in your birthdayhere so that random people will be sent over to your blog on your birthday to tell you how awesome you are.

How often do you stretch?
-I try to stretch after each work-out but for at least 5 minutes.

Do you have a foam roller or use a foam roller?
-I have one at home and I always use the one at the gym....even though there is probably ridiculous amounts of other humans sweat absorbed into the foam.

I have never used a foam roller, so I'd be interested in hearing how you use it.

I use my roller twice a day ;)

Ah, thank you! I have never used a foam roller and I've always been curious. "I'm not wearing white tights." HAHA. Um PLEASE come go to Marmalade Skies! Maybe some day! :)

Hi! New follower, Love your blog! You are so funny! Love the foam roller! I wish I could make myself do it more often!

My foam roller is bright orange. I love it too. I actually need to foam roll my legs soon! They feel a little tight. Hope your knee is feeling better. Mine is, and I want to run, but I am afraid to because I am afraid it will hurt.

Cool video!! I was wondering how to use those things. I dont have one but have heard others talk about them.

Running wise - I stretch after every run and target a few muscles before my run (few really means just one haha).

Non running stretching - Try to everday but at least 6 days a week.

Cool video :)
I try and stretch after every workout.

That's a good roller to start with, but it doesn't work the muscle very deeply. Once you get used to it and are ready for some "tough love", try this one: www.rumbleroller.com

Umm-I wonder how many creepy hits you'll get off that post title!

White tights..lol!! You look SUPER fit!! I'm breaking a commandment here just reading this post. Thou shalt not covet....ha!

I do have a foam roller but I'm a bad stretcher...better since my injury. I just gagged thinking about the body fluids of others on the gym foam roller. Gross!

Great video-you're much more coordinated than me with that thing!!

A foam roller has definitely been on my wish list for a while. I use them at the gym but it would be awesome to have one at home. Oh, and don't worry, I'm about 47 times more pasty than you ... for real.

I now have a Christmas gift suggestion--thanks! I'm terrible about stretching, so maybe having a cool new toy will help with that!
The white tights comment cracked me up! Though I'm sure I have you beat--oh the joys of living "up north"!

I stretch after every workout. If i'm at the gym, I use the Precor Stretch Trainer and then do my own stretches. If i'm running and not near the gym, I just do my own stretches.

I have a foam roller at home, but I rarely use it. I prefer to use 1 particular one at the gym because it's hard as a rock and inflicts more pain, the good kind ;-)

I have asked for a foam roller for christmas as they look very useful :)

I have a blue roller just like you! I use it mostly for my calf muscles as Bf running gives them a constant workout.

I have never stretched with a foam roller so this will help me in using on at the gym. I stretch my legs before I run and after. ihatethetreadmill.blogspot.com

I really need a foam roller! I kid you not I woke up in excrutiating leg pain last night from a lot of cardio and leg strength. I stretched a little, took 2 aleve, and a hot bath then passed back out. But a foam roller could have come in handy!

I don't ever stretch. I used to in HS when I ran track but never really saw any difference whether I stretched or didn't, so I stopped.

As I have gotten older (yes, it happens to the best of us), I have needed to do extra warming up and extra stretching... before and after every workout. And I have a spiffy red foam roller that gets used before and after every run as well... and often in between. LOVE my roller! I have to hide it from the kids though.

At December 5, 2010 at 3:20 PM , Blogger Amanda@runninghood said...

must try this! Thank you. I've never used one of these before. ;) And Yes, Boston 2012 or 13...it's a plan! Nice legs...be careful with this video..you might get some pervs coming just to check you out!

Now I'm tempted to get one. I never - I mean NEVER - stretch, and what do you know, I pulled my hamstring. Shocking, I know. That came out of nowhere! This ought to be a life (or routine) changing injury but I'm pretty sure I'll just run through it like a ding-bat.

I have a foam roller and just started using it a few weeks ago. The best pain ever! I think it's funny that your foam roller is a boy, I'll have to check and see what gender mine is!

Honestly, how cute are you? :) I have a love hate relationship with my foam roller. Mine doesn't come with candy though... and I definitely don't use it enough!

Oh my gosh you crack me up! I appreciate the instructional video because I never actually knew how to use them! Maybe I'll get one soon!

As far as stretching goes, since November 1, I've stretched for at least 5 minutes after every run and I truly think it has helped my recovery process.

you are too cute! I love this video. I have a love/hate relationship with my foam roller. but at the end of the day, the foam roller wins my love. :)

I love foam rolling and try to use it for at least 5 minutes a day. I also just got the traveling stick which is awesome because my foam roller will not fit in my suit case :)

I have a foam roller and really never use it. The first time I did I was in immense pain. I think I was bruised from the inside out from that thing. It's not so bad now but it's one of those things I always forget to do.

Great video :) do you actually roll over the side of your knee? I am always afraid to roll over it...

i love my foam roller. although i do have to admit that i'm not great about using it unless i feel myself on the verge of an injury. thanks for the reminder that i should be doing it more often. in fact, i am going to do it tonight. my legs are crazy tight after my 15 miles today....but knowing that it is going to hurt makes me scared. :(

I love your video! I think it's time I invest in a foam roller now that I've run my first race!! OK, I probably should have invested in one during training but better late than never...

I couldn't get the video to work.. but I have used one of these before when I was in pt.. I just remember it hurting a lot during but feeling way better after. I wouldn't mind getting one to roll out my left hip/butt cheek which gets a little angry after longer runs.. Do they sell them at Bed Bath and Beyond?

I have a foam roller, recommended by my PT after I hurt my hamstring. It hurts so good to roll on it to stretch out your IT band. A few rolls, and it feels so much better. It also feels good rolling my feet over it.

I try to stretch every day but I'll admit, I don't do it often enough now that I live in a small apartment without a lot of floor space.

Foam rollers are SO awesome. I don't know why, but it took me forever to get on board with them. We have about 10 of them at my work, and I even was having my clients use them. I just wasn't taking the time to roll out myself. Boy was I stupid...it's the best thing ever. Seriously...hurts so good. I've been using a soft ball too, which is EXTREMELY painful, but gets the deep tissue where the roller sometimes can't. I didn't know Golds had one??

At December 5, 2010 at 10:29 PM , Blogger Unknown said...

You crack me up.
Did you know I have two foam rollers? A hard one and a soft one. Don't be jealous, you can have two foam rollers, too. One is evil and one is my angel but I need to use "evil" more than angel right now.

P.S. I'm stretching twice a day now, ugh!

Just back for another clever comment ;)

I hope your knee is back and ready to run! Let me know what you're thinking about boston. I'd love to know what you have brewing for training.

The no-foam roller is working pretty well for me too- except for the bony hips. You are so brave to video yourself doing that!

I just got a foam roller (it looks just like yours... now I feel cooler!) and it's as good (and pleasurably painful as I was told it would be). I need to use it more, but from the bit I have used it, I love it!

Also, you're too funny with your "white tights"! :)

Thanks for the tutorial! I use one at the gym all of the time. I spent the $30 on The Stick (which I don't like) but somehow $20 on foam is too expensive for me.

Thanks for your compliments on my blog! You're too sweet!

I have a foam roller but luckily I haven't been needing it for a long time now. I only stretch my back for a minute or so before my early morning runs.

I am not even a runner, but active otherwise, and I would never go without my foam roller. I am an old girl compared to you all, and believe me, it will keep you young and able to do what you'd like to do. So keep on rolling and keep your body, mind and soul happy by doing so. You might be surprised what comes out as you keep foam rolling!

I'm constantly hearing/reading about them, but I've never used one before. I've thought about it... but since I had absolutely no idea what to do with one I held off. Not anymore. I'm pretty sure this is going to change my life!

Love the giant perspective in that photo! I have a love hate relationship with my roller. I only use it when I feel I absolutely must, otherwise it just sits there for show. I rarely stretch, I know, I'm awful.

I need one. I feel like I'm a bad runner for not having one. It's true (and sad?) that I would be much more inclined to purchase one if it came packaged with tootsie pops like yours.

Thank you for the video!! My mom has one at her house and I've always wondered what I could use it for... now I know! :) I just ran my first marathon 2 weeks ago and my left knee is a little sore, so maybe this can be another way to help me nurse it back to health, hopefully!! I can't wait to get back to running again! I bet you know how that feels!!
