How to become the favorite aunt.

I missed you my lil' blogger bff's.  I have a new found respect for all of you woman out there with children.  All of you woman that have kids and train......um, how do you do it, I AM EXHAUSTED and after I push publish, I am taking my second nap of the day.  Good thing it is SUNDAY rest day.......but that also means it is almost MONDAY SPEED DAY.  I am scurred.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How to become the favorite aunt/uncle or how to make kids really love you.

Let them play ipod games whenever they want.

IMG_4527.JPG

Share your lemonade with them.  I am pretty sure we went through at least five glasses.

IMG_4540.JPG

Take them to their favorite restaurant (Del Taco) and let them play on the play place for hours.

IMG_4535.JPG

You may also do as I did and create challenges for them.  For example:  Keep lemonade in their mouth, one eye closed and crossed fingers as they go through the entire obstacle course and slides in less than 20 seconds.  I made them gurgle at the end to prove that they didn't swallow their drink.

IMG_4546.jpg

When you get home from Del Taco whip up a batch of cookies with them and eat half the dough yourself explaining that adults are immune to salmonella poisoning and that is why it is okay for me to eat large amounts of cookie dough.

IMG_4557.JPG

Hot Chocolate after a million cookies? Sure why not....heck, add double the amount of the chocolate mix and put in as many marshmallows as your little heart desires.

IMG_4555.jpg

Let them stay up until 11:30 p.m. with you watching Toy Story 3 and Jimmy Newtron and then join you in bed right when they wake up in the morning to hang out and use your as a chair.

IMG_4569.jpg

Last but not least, chocolate chip pancakes for breakfast are a must.

IMG_4566.JPG

I really am more tired than I am after LONG runs and even marathons:)  It was so much fun and it was (sorry, time for mushy gushy grossness) especially awesome to see Billy in action....he is going to be an amazing Dad someday (that is after I win a few marathons:)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Did you babysit a lot growing up?

-I used to babysit almost every weekend from the years of 12-16.  I was also a nanny for a few years for two kids in elementary school and that was SO MUCH FUN!!!

Do you have neices of nephews?

-Yep, 13 of them!

As you know I did weights yesterday and I AM SORE!!! How many times a week do you feel like you are sore from your workouts?

-I feel like everyday I am at least a little sore somewhere, I don't remember not feeling sore anywhere.  Let's just hope that means I am gaining muscle:)

If you are a mom and you run/workout......HOW DO YOU DO IT???

I did babysit growing up but never really enjoyed it until I had my own kids. Now that I have my own kids we totally do all that stuff, everyday! With of course a good sprinkling of healthy food and not always so late! Just the other night I made crepes with peanut butter and chocolate frosting. Who's the best mom? This girl!
Running and kids, can I say YMCA! Free 90 minutes of daycare everyday. The reason I am sane and not a zillion pounds! Oh and they make great weights for pushing in a jogger. Talk about a good core/ab workout while you are running! They also love being bench pressed. Just think of them as talking kettle weights and you'll get all the working out you can ever want!

How is it possible that I'm the first to comment?!?

I'm a running mommy, and I think that is a bond that makes me LOVE other blogging running mommies - because it is a sacrifice/challenge to get our workouts in, and because our bodies have gone through pregnancy/delivery, making previous PRs a goal to be (re)achieved for many (not me - I didn't start running seriously until after babies!). The only thing I can say about being able to do it is 1) I have an AWESOME husband who I love so much, who allows me to take weekends to race and long run, and supports me through it. and 2) give up some sleep. It's the only way I can find to make it all work!

What a good Aunt you are. Super fun! When you are a parent you don't have to be "super fun" all the time, but it can still be tiring. More than the tiring part, for me at least, is, you really need to condense your workout time to an hour while the kids are little. "Time" is the biggest limiter in my workout.

Did I babysit? Never! Not a fan of kids, really. Funny now to think about it as a mom of 5.

I get sore when I change things up. Since I was training for the 1/2, I have really just been running and lifting (same old things). Now I will go back to more variety, like swimming and kick boxing. I'd also like to find some different weight lifting things to focus on. Sore = success.

I did it! First half marathon this morning in 1:39.04. I am waiting on some pictures from my brother and course photog to write up a detailed blog post.

Holy Moly you have SO MANY nieces+nephews!! Seriously you are an awesome aunt!! And this is my life right here. Cookie dough eating, watching Toy Story till late and pancakes for breakfast?! Yep, all me! :P

And aches?! Like EVERY DAY! Specially after BodyPump! I wake up feeling like I've been hit with a mallet, but like you said, it means it's working...right?! :)

I babysat all the time. I love kids but I don't think I'm ready for my own. I watched my sis's 4 young kids for a weekend once and by the end of it I was throwing tantrums.

Right now I have 10 nieces and nephews, but I get to add one niece to that count sometime this week or next. Woohoo!!!

I am a mom, and I run/ workout. Fortunately my daughters are in 2nd and 4th grade and can take care of themselves a little bit. It also helps that the YMCA near us is AWESOME! The girls can take their homework and sit in the lobby to work on it while I work out. They can also do the rock wall, go into the computer lab, play board games, and a variety of other activities. So, when I hit the gym the girls think it is time for their independent time away from me because they have the run of the rest of the YMCA. That is SUPER nice! They also come to classes with me on occasion, and we make it family time. Since starting a healthier lifestyle last year, my kids know that exercise is important for all of us but especially on the front of my mind since I am the one in the family who really needs to lose weight.

Mom's just have to be more creative with their workout time...and scheduling. And sometimes it seems like I'm asking my hubby for permission for workout times so he can watch the kiddos. He doesn't see it this way. And thank goodness for gyms with daycare! And last summer when my kids were older, I discovered my "block" was a mile. So I'd run a block, check on the kids do another mile. I trained for an olympic distance tri like this, while my husband traveled. And, my kids know when mom needs a workout, running makes me a better mom. Period.

You are awesome! I completely agree with you that it is so much fun being the favorite aunt! My husband and I don't have kids (yet, maybe in a few years) and we take my sister's 3 kids a few times a year. A long weekend here and there and then for an entire week around Christmas time. They are 5, 6 and 10 and so much fun! However, I never get time to workout when they're here and I sleep like crazy after they leave. I do it when I'm on vacation from work and have no other commitments. I'm completely in your boat that I have no idea how parents do it!

You are the BEST auntie! My kids would LOVE to have you babysit!

I babysat a whole lot all through high school... every weekend and more. I have 2 nieces and 2 nephews... they are older and not local so I have never babysat them.

My working out is very limited. And I am not as fun a mommy as you are an auntie ;-) I was a really fun stepmom, though. I joke about how that drained all my 'fun' energy. Right now I only am able to squeeze in 3 runs a week. I could (and probably should) throw a little cross-training in, but I most often just feel wiped out. I am also a pretty old mamma... so I need to conserve my energies ;-)

We babysat our 20 month old niece for a few hours last night and I'm pooped today! She was running all over the place - we had some Crayola color wonderful markers and this neat paper that sticks to the walls so she could "write" on the walls, watched Shrek and Despicable Me (and a little Barney), made cinnamon rolls and scrambled eggs for dinner and let her sit on the coffee table. Fun times :) The funniest part was when she found the fridge and started DEMANDING milk! She chugged the first glass in like 10 seconds flat...at least she'll have strong bones!

ha ha! great post! all of this will come back to bite you some day when you are a mom :0) in the meantime, keep spoiling those nieces and nephews.

when you're a mom/runner, you just do the best you can. you don't clean your house as much as you should and you let little things slide, but you make it work.

I am a mom of 2 girls, 4 and 2. I could not do it (esp the long runs) if it weren't for a supportive husband. We do not have family close, and he is willing to adjust his schedule any which way---in order to help me get runs in. Just today he took the girls to the park that I ran 9 miles at, and by the time I was done he had gone to the store and bought a picnic lunch for us all! And I do the same for him--I will add! He is the best, and together we make a great team. You seem to have a supportive husband too and when kiddos come around, he will be more than willing to do what he needs to do then too!

I don't have any of my own, but I gained 2 neices and one nephew by marriage. Dewayne's sister has 3 kids, but they're mostly grown. Justin is 22 and getting married in June, Mariah is 17 and leaving for the Air Force in August, and Taylor will turn 11 next month. She's the closest to a kid that we have in the family!

i am not training for anything, and my workours are never more than an hour, and i only have one kid...BUT i've realized recently that it is a priority adn even if i don't want to leave my little guy to do it, i have to. also, as far as the energy goes? remember that you won't just suddenly have 3 kids that are the ages of your nieces/nephews. you start with one tiny one and it's gradual, ya know? i mean, i only have one, but i used to DIE when i'd tend my nieces and nephews, but having a baby is my life, so it's normal. it's not like i'm extra tired. you adjust. if that makes sense??

I definitely find that bribery works awesome with the niece and nephew. I only have the two of them - 4 year old twins. I don't see them often (they live 3000 miles away), but I find that the more candy and loud toys I can give them, running and screaming with them, jumping on the bed, etc all makes them better people! ;)

train with kids = running at 5am before the husband goes to work, running during school/preschool, jogging stroller, running while the biggest one rides his bike along side, early morning long runs on the weekend, treadmill at the gym when they have childcare, running on the indoor track that is above the pool and looks down to the pool while the biggest one is in swim lessons and constantly feeling guilty that I should be spending time with the family instead of running and running just a bit fast knowing the kiddos will be anxiously awaiting you when you get home.

I'm sore 1 - 2 times a week depending on intensity. My kids are in school now so I hit the gym when they are at school. When they were little I used the child care at the gym regularly.

Glad you had fun babysitting! Finding time to run with my little one is hard- especially since my husband is a runner as well. We have to tag team it a lot- you go first, then I go when you get home. Summer is much easier, since we both are teachers, we can go whenever we want and take the munchkin with us ;)

I used to babysit all the time, and I used to teach horseback riding lessons to kids and worked at a horseback riding summer camp! Working at the camp was SO much work (heat, children, and 1,000 pound animals!), but I loved loved loved it! The kids were so much fun, and if they were ever bad you just had to threaten not to let them ride and they shaped up immediately;). Also, you got to tire them out and then send them home at the end of the day;).

Thirteen!? Wow!! No nieces and nephews for me yet, Eric and I are both the oldest in our families!

I get sore after speed workouts/weights, really long rides/runs..so maybe a couple of times a week?

I don't know how the moms do it, either!! I am so impressed with moms who still manage to train/workout on a regular basis! They are all my heroes!!

I always get sore after weight training workouts, because my body isn't as used to them as running... I think the key is stretching and a consistent schedule.

Will you guys come out to DC and babysit my daughter?! It looks like those kids had the time of their lives.
Motherhood is definitely exhausting but your body gets used to it. I fit in working out early in the morning before my daughter wakes up, or at night after she goes to bed. BUT, we just purchased a new jogging stroller and there is a park right down the trail so we'll be running there together a lot this Spring.

I'm an awesome stud muffin, that's how I do it! Or maybe I cry sometimes over spilt milk. No, the first one. Definitely the first one.

You're body adjusts to kids, luckly they start off real small and pretty easy, and trick you into a couple more. Then you forget what "well rested" feels like, and it becomes the new "norm". Add running into the mix and we're pretty much in a chubby cheek-ed induced euphoria.

Sending you speedy thoughts for your run tomorrow. :)

I am a new mom to a four month old little girl! I ran all through my pregnancy and I am now back to running 6-7 miles 6 days a week. Basically it takes pure dedication and motivation to get up at 5am and run on little sleep but it is way worth it since I have my pre prego body back and it also makes me feel like my "old" self again. I can't wait until my daughter is 6 months old and she can run with me in the jogging stroller.

Little kids are the best! I used to babysit a TON when I was younger...I went all out and even made my own business cards haha.

Do you have neices of nephews?
None yet! I come from such a tiny family. My sister JUST got married about a month ago so no kids yet...plus I only have TWO cousins total--that is how small our family is!

I am probably sore about 2 times a week from working out...and it is usually from overdoing it with weights. I'm rarely sore from cardio unless I do something totally different like kickboxing or something.

I make time for workouts in the early hours. I'm not a morning routine fan with the kid so I leave and dad has to do it....perfection...

Aww, you two will make such fantastic parents! I am 24 (almost 25) and I stil babysit constantly. Just babysit last night actually. :) It's like my part-time job. I love kids! I just can't imagine having any. Moms get ALL of my respect. It is exhausting!

I can't imagine having kids yet, i'm not sure i can keep a plant alive. I really want a basil plant but i'm afraid i'll kill it

The pic of the little girl with big eyes over the hot cocoa container is pretty much the CUTEST THING EVER. She cannot BELIEVE you gave her free reign with all that chocolate :)
