1/2 Marathon Thursday.

My plan until 'official training for Boston' is to run Tuesdays and Thursdays (of course only if everything is still feeling good) and cross-train the other days.

This morning I did 3 miles in these.........

IMG_1771.JPG

1% incline 8:20 minute miles. I have done a 5-finger shoe review beforehere if you want to know more.

And then 10 miles in these..........

IMG_2648.jpg

1% incline with an average of 7:41 miles.  You can make fun of my 10.5 size feet, I've heard all the jokes already.

Not even the slightest amount of knee pain.  Take that Mr. OLD injury.

My feet are raw from the Vibrams today.  Just a few blisters:)  I lost the calluses that I built up from barefoot running.

Can I share something really kind of demented about me..... I kind of find blisters awesome.  That is all I will say about that.

Utah Valley Marathon 40.jpg

Sorry I had too....this was from the Utah Valley Marathon because it was raining the whole time...puddles and running 26.2 miles don't mix.

Oh, and yes that is hair on my knees.  The only way I can squeeze in exercising so much, a full-time job, baking ridiculous amounts of sugary foods, stalking you guys and blogging is by sacrificing things like shaving, washing my hair and plucking my eyebrows.

Priorities people.

Some peeps have wondered how in the heck (Utah word, sorry)  I can run so long on a treadmill without losing it....

1.  First of all, I probably have lost it mentally already, we all know I am a little off in the first place.  Good thing I fooled Billy while we were dating, he thought I was normal...muhahaha.

2.  I am very simple minded.  Thinking about the most random things keeps me happy.

3.  I am a numbers fool and I love thinking about pace, times and crossing the finish line of my marathon sub 3 hours.

4. I get to watch TV without feeling like I should be learning and getting smarter and stuff...who does that anyways.

4. I am RUNNING...what else do you need in this life?  Besides this.....

IMG_0641.jpg

P.S. I think I am officially addicted to McDonalds ice cream.

What do you think about barefoot running? Do you stare at those weirdos wearing Vibrams like they have some serious problems?

-I have to admit I have lost friends, and lost cool points with my students because of them.

Favorite chocolate candy bar?  (Sorry, I need to know these things people!)

-Milky way, Carmellos and COOKIES and CREME bars.  It has been the same since I was 5.  If you need my address to send these to me just shoot an email on over.

Junior Mints and ANY dark chocolate bar and the chocolate pomegranate cookie dough I just made that is amazing! I'm gonna give treadmill running another chance this winter because it is currently 15 degrees out (but the weather channel says it feels like 2 degrees).

I love your hairy knees. (that sounded kind of creepy)...
No really...'cause I hate to shave. Whenever my 6 y/o daughter plays like she's my physical therapist and works on my legs, she always writes me a prescription that says "shave once a day, sometimes twice"...hehehe.

Favorite chocolate bar has got to be a SKOR bar...followed by Heath...followed by Almond Roca...
see a trend?

Hilarious post! I think it's great you can run in vibrams or barefoot. I have been trying to ween myself off of my orthotics slowly so that I can eventually get there. Long process.

I love dark chocolate anything.

Favorite Candy bar: Snickers on a regular basis. When doing my ultra runs, it has to be a PayDay bar (protein, energy/sugar and salt all rolled into one). That is a true ultra runner's candy bar.

I don't think barefoot running is for everyone. I work at a Fleet Feet (parttime) and I see way too many injuries from customers who run barefoot or half marathons in NIKE FREES etc thinking they are the best shoe.

Also, shoes should not give you blisters. If they are, they are not the right shoe for you (rainy wet weather aside). If you have blisters it could be a shoe fit or a sock problem.

I have a size 10.5. I can feel your pain. We never get the "cute" shoes on sale anywhere because let's face it, 10.5 isn't a cute size.

1. I don't know anything about barefoot running, aside from that it seems like it would hurt!

2. Dark chocolate Reese's. I bought a TON of them at Target when they were on clearance.

3. I L O V E the treadmill!! It's the only time I get to really watch my guilty indulgences (okay, it's the Food Network and Top Chef).

Heath, Payday, Butterfingers (yes it is one word), Oh Henry, Baby Ruths, Carmello, Reses Cups (yes, cups count as bars), Hershey's Plain and with Almonds. Love Almond Roca! You can mail me any and all of them if you want!!! :)

My feelings barefoot/Vibrams is really forcing you to run in a better injury free form/posture. Which you can train yourself to do with shoes. Thus also saving your feet from other injuries? (nails, screws, glass, sharp rocks)

I have attempted bf running a couple of times now. I just wish I didn't have to completely start back at square one. I just realized I could easily be running a couple miles bf and then the rest with shoes without having to sacrifice distance. Great idea, why didn't I think of it?

Did anyone ever tell you that you are hardcore?

My fave is Cookies 'n' Creme tied with with solid white chocolate. White chocolate could have spinach in it and it would still be my favorite candy bar...

Whenever I shave I never manage to the the knees, they always escape unshaved. I haven't seen too many people wearing Vibrams but way to work it! I might give them a go eventually.

I definitely think that barefoot running/Vibrams is interesting. I'm not sure it's something that I will ever get into but I don't think it's weird.

As far as chocolate candy bars, I love Butterfingers. And Snickers. And Twix. Wow, thanks for bringing this up. Good thing I have chocolate chip cookies.

McDonald's ice cream makes me SO HAPPY! :)

I prefer the treadmill mostly because I get REALLY distracted when running outside- I like to slow down to look at things that pique my interest, and this is NOT good for completing any sort of serious workout...

I wear a size 10.5 too. Ok sometimes a 10 or 9.5 depends on the shoe type but big feet are cool. You have a very interesting way of lacing your shoes. Also what kind of shoes are your running shoes?

I am not a fan of barefoot running, but I wont stop reading your blog just because you run in vibrams! Great job on the 13 miles total! I don't know how you do it but I am impressed!

Candy bar...hmm tough one. I love reeses. 3 Musketeers are good too because they don't make me feel too fast after I eat one.

At December 9, 2010 at 5:35 PM , Blogger Unknown said...

girl everytime i read your blog i am more impressed! Barefoot running is tough, but at a 8:20 pace!! I think you are part Kenyan. Super fast! The max I've done on the treadmill is 11 miles. eek!
Oh and don't worry, I wear a 10 shoe and have finger toes. :)

Bah I so want to try running in Vibrams but I don't know if I would like them, so I'm scared to spend the money on them. Eek. I don't really know how I would transition?

Favorite candy - Reeces Sticks! They are kinda hard to find though, so dark chocolate reeces come in second place.

Never tried the Vibrams but I have run on the treadmill many times barefoot.

You don't ease into anything, do you?! I love it-very motivating!! Congrats on the run and especially NO pain!!

My sister wears a 10.5 shoe. I laugh because she gives all her old shoes to my dad (he is cheap and is also a runner). He's been known to wear purple shoes with pink accents!!

Reese's Fastbreak, Symphony with toffee chips, Peanut Butter M and M's, Midnight Milky Way, Dark Dove chocolate.....and the list goes on....I have a bowl full of Mr. Goodbars (yuck) on my fridge from Halloween that don't tempt me. I guess that is one good thing...

You will break 3 hours in Boston-I'll bet on it:)

I noticed you posted about Cookies and Creme bars prior to this post... I never knew anyone else loved them as much as me! I also love Milky Ways! :) I think it's cool that some people can do the whole barefoot running thing... it's not for me, but I give credit to those who can do it.

Nice job on the 13 miles! Do you do most of your runs on the treadmill or just for now since you're only running a couple times/week?

Rediculos size 10 feet here too!!! I really want a pair of vibrams but there is no where in town I know of that carry's them, so I am hoping to find a pair at my next race expo. I used to be afraid of them because I always thought only the hippie runners wore them ( SO judgemental I know) but I have read such great things about them that I know they are worth the try!

Oh and Kit-Kat bars rule all Chocolate, most importantly dark chocolate kit-kats... Shudders...

At December 9, 2010 at 6:20 PM , Blogger Meghan said...

I looked into barefoot running. I made some flat sandals of my own. Vibrams are just too expensive for me, though they seem cool. I can't run barefoot here because of dangerous things in the streets.

Favorite Candy bar would be milky way, although I'd prefer, probably, a bag of plain M&Ms cause I'm simple like that.

I'm the same way on the treadmill, though it definitely took getting used to. I have to use a treadmill again in a couple weeks, so we'll see how well I go back to it. Watching all the numbers keeps me pretty entertained. And people watching at the gym is entertaining in itself.

Oh and just in case my last comment wasn't long enough, I really do enjoy my treadmill time. I watch tv, avoid the elements and don't have to stress about cars or crazy people or dogs attacking me. I have done 20 miles on the
Treadmill, and as ling as there is a good football game on I could stay there for hours!

I'd be interested to try vibrams. I've only ever seen one person wearing them and I stared at them thinking "That's so awesome!"

I do love me some snickers and reeses.

I used to only run on the treadmill; it was great to catch up on House, Boy Meets World, Dancing with the Stars, and Vampire Diaries without feeling guilty about it. However, my treadmill only allows about 4ish miles on it now before it shuts down from an overheated engine. It really was great that it did that because it got me outside and gave me the courage to sign up for my first half marathon. I'm worried about winter, though...

You're my hero Janae - how can you possibly just bust out a half marathon on a Thursday morning before work without absolutely dying?

At December 9, 2010 at 7:30 PM , Blogger sdralphs said...

First and foremost I just got back from the gym and it felt wonderful to have time to fit it in without coaching! I ran on the treadmill, which I hate! I can NEVER find anything good on T.V. and if I do my headphones shock the crap out of my ears so I cannot even wear them because if I do I have a mini seizure every time it shocks me and I think people start to wonder. So I have to take them out and be bored out of my mind! Honestly you would have to pay me HUGE money to stay on that thing as long as you. Now if I'm outside, I can go forever. Blast winter time!

I also tried the stair climber! Lets just say you were my inspiration. I had no idea what setting or level to do, so I just played around with it. I went for 15 minutes and I was sweating up a storm. I kept thinking about what you said in a post, "Don't put your hands on the bars!" I kept checking the door to see if you would walk in so I could take my hands off really quick, but honestly girl if I don't I will eat crap. How do you not hold on and not stair at your feet and get sick from watching the stairs move? I obviously have a lot to learn about surviving the gym in winter time!

McDonalds ice cream is BOMB! I would love to try barefoot running, but I fear the blisters. I don't think they are cool like you. My favorite candy bars are: Snickers, 100 Grand, Kit Kat, Twix, and Caramello. I think I just named all of them.

I understand this post is getting really long, but honestly people will get over it. I just want you to know you are my healthy living inspiration! I have eaten a ton more vegetables then I normally do and tried new exercises because of you! And it feels GOOD! You rock.

P.S. Tomorrow is Friday and that is heavenly because it's the weekend for us! Maybe if I get out of bed I'll make it to Saturday spin!

If Reese's count, they're my favorite chocolate bar. If they don't count, then it's Butterfinger.*
* Just kidding, it's Carmello. Quit saying Carmello out loud! If we don't keep it a secret, someone will buy up all of them at my dollar store - the only store here that sells them!

honestly i am super curious about the vibrams. you know, this week, all three times i've been on the treadmill i've been tempted to take off my shoes. something about running in them makes me feel awkward. but i'm a little scared... not sure why...i just don't know what to do, or how to do it.

Barefoot running... hmmmm... not for me. I have really rigid feet and need some cushioning. Those are some bitchin' blisters you have there! When I used to row, I kind of dug my cool blisters, too, so I think I get the demented fascination ;-)

Hairy knees are a sign of a more highly evolved woman ;-)

Chocolate candy bar... I really prefer the pure, unadulterated bliss of TJ's Pound Plus dark chocolate... can't remember how dark my fave was though... haven't had chocolate in months... much to my dismay :(

McDonald's ice cream... YUM. How do they make it taste and feel so good? The texture is just rockin'.

Vibrams are weird because each toe gets a toe crotch and they make me avert my eyes when I see them. Something about seperating toes in public makes we want to barf.
Reeces, Carmellos, Milky way, snickers, Baby ruth, Take 5 and whatchamacallit.
Id like them delivered overnight please. I have been eating lettuce far too long.

Oh, and FYI...when I get done with where ever I am right now (no, I'm NOT going to give you a hint), then I'll be back in Draper Utah for a teeny tiny bit longer. Are you thinking what I'm thinking?? :)

I have to say, I don't really have a favorite candy bar... I much prefer bite-sized candy anything (hence the love for bulk bins).

Love the blister pride - you should have seen some of mine after the 72-hour race I did in New England last summer. Think three days of biking/running/paddling through water, mud, sand, roads, trails, and dense, dense brush. :)

(All that said - I can actually get pretty into the treadmill zone-out, too, for similar reasons. Though I'm not nearly that fast!)

I've ran 28 miles on a treadmill. Yes, I'm crazy. Favorite candy ~ Easter is my downfall. I love Cadbury chocolate. Put some of the hard shell mini eggs in a bowl and in the microwave for 15-30 seconds and you won't regret it. To be honest anything chocolate is good as long as there aren't nuts involved.

After running Portland in the rain I had zero blisters. I was soaked before it even started but I was wearing CEP Compression socks. I think they helped.
