Triple Tangent Tuesday

Why if it isn't Triple Tangent Tuesday....my favorite day of the week.  This is the day that I share 3 random tangents about myself and you do the same thing in the comments so that we can all feel like we are a little more normal than we thought.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1.  Thanks everyone for all the emails, texts and sweet comments about my legs.  Our prayers were answered!!!

IMG 4925

I have a muscle strain but my PT is 100% confident I will be able to run Boston....as for the PR, that is another story.  My PT is an ironman, hard core marathoner and has run Boston many times,  he knows exactly how I am feeling and exactly what to do to fix the problem.

No running for a week or two but he wants me to do 17 hours of biking/swimming this week.  I almost cried tears of joy when I heard that because I LOVE a good sweat and I know that these things will help me keep up my endurance (I was worried they would say no biking and less swimming).  They prescribed steroids for me so hungryrunnergirl is going to become hungriestbeastyouwillevermeetgirl because the steroids make you HUNGRY!! Feel free to send your grocery money donations to me whenever you get a chance.

2.  I went to a semester of college at BYU Hawaii.  (Ashton don't kill me for putting this picture on the internet) I went there all by myself and met some of my best friends on the first day.  We were inseparable.

And you thought my hygiene was bad now.......you didn't know me when I lived in Hawaii.  It was wrong on some many levels.  The ocean was my shower.

N17809435 30675949 4265

We went SKYDIVING while we were there, it was incredible.  I wish I had pictures but my camera wasn't my fifth appendage back then like it is now.

3.  Whenever I go to Disneyland I HAVE to get a chocolate covered frozen banana!  Sure I look forward to the rides, getting my favorite Disney characters autographs and watching Michael Jackson in 3D......but, the real reason I go is for the frozen banana (or seven that I eat throughout the day, walking all over that park burns a lot of calories come on you know you do the same).  Oh, and the pickles.  They are the best pickles I have ever had.

IMG 0980

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Have you ever gown skydiving or bungee jumping?  If you had the opportunity to do it would you?

-I cannot get myself to bungee jump but I would go skydiving over and over again if I didn't spend all of my money on pears, running shoes and clothes at Forever 21 so that I can pretend I am still hip and make my students think I am cool.

What is your favorite part of amusement parks?

-Okay in honesty yes I love the frozen bananas but I am a roller coaster junkee.  At Islands of Adventure in Florida there were no lines and I went on a roller coaster so many times in a row I may have blacked out for a few seconds.

Do you CROSS-TRAIN?? What is your favorite form of cross-training?

-CYCLING/BIKING.  I was extremely happy that I am able to bike again.....LOVE IT.

TELL ME SOME OF YOUR TANGENTS!!!!

haaa.. I love the Hawaii one - my dad is from Hawaii and I spent childhood summers there... and all through college... I TOTALLY get what you're saying, Hawaii is VERY LOW KEY in so many areas... I went barefoot almost everywhere (absolutely everywhere that would let me, and some that frowned at me!) and yeah... there were many nights we spent on the beach. we had a place to live, we just preferred sleeping on the beach!

:D

I'm so glad you got good news today! And I love that your PT really understands what you're dealing with mentally/emotionally AND physically. Yay! Your package contains some food to help with your beastly cravings. Favorite cross-training is biking and I try to get to yoga a couple of times a week. I also own rollerblades and use them. People make fun of me, but I know you'd rollerblade with me, right?

Don't give up hope on that pr girl, you are awesome and super fast! Two weeks of cross training may be just the secret to getting steps closer to that sub 3. You've got in it you lady so keep chugging along!

YAYYYY!! that is excellent news!! what luck on the PT as well having run boston and everything. sounds like you are in GREAT hands.

let me know if you ever need a buddy for some cross training. I am going to keep a good balance (with probably a bit more on the cross training side) as I am working my way back into running. I have just been doing the elliptical so far but after this week it is up to me to choose :) I would love to try out the bike and possibly even one of your spin classes!! way to stay positive! your positive attitude is always so inspiring!

Obvi the most important part of this post is that you are gonna kick some Boston ass. YAY! My town, sistah, my town- ROCK IT!
The second most important part of this post is the frozen bananas. When the Hus and I go to Disney World we eat a ton of those little buggers. I LOVE them. LOVE. They are their own food group if you ask me... Yummmmm.

I'm so happy to hear that you'll be back to running soon! Would you mind doing a post specifically talking about the pain you had, how bad it was, what it felt like, and how you knew it was really an injury where you had to take time off of running. I'm not a serious runner by any means, but I'm constantly second guessing my aches and pains. I usually tend to go too easy on myself. The good part is I haven't ever had a serious injury, but sometimes I wonder if there are times when I could have kept running through the pain. Thanks!

WOO HOO! I AM SO HAPPY TO HEAR THE GREAT NEWS, JANAE!!! What a freakin' relief. I bet you feel SO much better that you are now able to pinpoint what the problem is and exactly how it can be fixed. I could not be happier for you right now. And the adrenaline you're going to get from all that biking and swimming is going to get you pumped for your last few weeks of training before BOSTON! You will kick ass and I have no doubt in my mind you'll hit that PR. Maybe you should make tons of homemade choc covered frozen bananas to feed that steroid appetite! :) :)

Great news about Boston. I'm sure you'll kill it.
One semester of BYU-Hawaii - yes please. I think my family can live without me for a few months while I study on the beach.
I used to consider running my cross training. But now I do pilates once a week, weight training 2x week, and take an athletic traing class once a week.
There is nothing like Disney excitement. It's the only amusement park that lives up to the hype (at least until I visit Harry Potter World in Orlando). I may have even teared up a little the last time we took the kids to Disneyland.
Never on the bungee jumping. I hate heights.

being injured is no fun, but knowing that you are in good hands, being treated by competent people who have experienced what you are training is a tremendous relief to the peace of mind. glad to read that you have that and a plan in place for a comeback!

and btw, the best churros in the world are at disneyland. truth!

Yay for Boston! Yay for your leg! Injuries are so frustrating!

I will give you one fact. Your BYU's Jimmer Fredette is from the town I live in. They love that guy so much they want to start an annual parade in his honor. I don't follow basketball but some of my friends know him and say he is a pretty nice guy.

For cross training .... if I want to be around people, then a class (kick boxing, group power, clubbin' cardio, spin), and if my day makes me want to be alone, then I swim ... usually I can do 3000 yds plus 5 min in the hot tub during my kids 60 minute swim practice (which is my gym time).

Glad your leg is feeling better.

Tangent? Thanks for asking. Why do the daffodils I planted around MY mailbox bloom a full week or two after everyone else's daffodils? Do they not like me? Did I plant them too low? What's up with that?

Congrats on the great news from the PT!!! So happy you can still run Boston!!!! I bet you won't lose that much fitness since you will be able to kick butt in the pool and on the bike. Good luck with your training!

I guess I would try sky diving.. It looks kind of scary though! That's just a maybe for me.. :)

My favorite part of amusement parks is the FOOD! Haha and the roller coasters :)

I'm not much of a cross trainer... I'm just terrible at swimming and I don't own a bike. :(

At March 22, 2011 at 5:25 PM , Blogger Christine said...

I do a horrible job cross training (elliptical maybe once a week running 4), but am thinking of getting an exercise bike.

My tangent: I ask my students weird questions on quizzes for extra credit points, just to make them explain their opinions. Examples: Why does rock beat paper? What's your favorite breakfast cereal and why? Who'd you rather be stuck in an elevator with, a science teacher or a math teacher?

YESssssssss!! Prayers have been answered!! So glad it is a strain--only. How nice to have a PT that "gets it"! So so so happy you will be able to run Boston!!

I went skydiving in HI too! Beautiful views, but I was SO nervous! I can't stand rides that go in circles (bleh-sicky) but like rollercoasters.

I am SUCH a roller coaster freak! Love 'em, love 'em, love 'em!!! My hubs is a total pansy though and doesn't like them too much. We went to Six Flags in Atlanta with his whole family a couple of summers ago and me and my brother-in-law rode every single one. We're the adrenaline junkies in the family.

Have you ever been to Cedar Point? We're planning on going this summer. My nephew and his fiancee live in Cleveland, so we're all going to go up there and stay with him for a couple of days and hit up the amusement park. I'm so stoked!

And, girlie, I am SO THRILLED about your leg! Doesn't it just make all the difference in the world when your healthcare provider "gets" where you're coming from? YAYYY!!!!!

I love roller coasters. I could ride the, everyday all day!! I'm not one of those people that need a break to eat or let my tummy rest. I'm on them 24/7.

WOOHOOO!!!! So so happy for your good news! That is awesome!

Also a little selfish-ly happy about your post. I am 6 weeks out from my marathon and seriously overtrained. Irritable, moody, decreased performance, crappy race times, depressed about running, injured and sick last week - the whole shebang. I am out for the next few days, then was thinking about cross training. If you can get to Boston on biking and swimming for the next week or two, then so can I!! Yay!

PS - you rock. your recent posts have definitely helped in the last week or so, as this overtraining syndrome worked on ruining my running-life (and I LOVE running!).

i don't think i would sky dive, but i LOVE rollercoasters too! also, my favourite form of cross training: walking, spinning/cycling, & i'm getting into yoga now :)

SO great to hear the good news!

I did the exact same thing when there was no line to roller coasters at Silver Dollar City! Which is a place you've probably never heard of, but it's an amusement park not too far from where I live. They have this awesome ride called The Swing that's kind of like those pirate boats that swing back and forth, but in this one you just sit in a roller coaster-like seat and it swings you way high into the air. If you sit on one side you end up facing a stream and it feels like you're 1000 feet in the air, and if you kick your feet up when you're about to descend your stomach flies up into your chest; it's amazing!

I WILL be going skydiving soon! So excited! Not sure if I'd be able to do bungee jumping though. What if the cord breaks? What if it wraps around your neck? Wouldn't it cause some serious whip-lash?

I do the elliptical a lot. I'd like to bike and swim... but... don't really have the right stuff.

I love Disneyland and it's all about the food for me. I'm not a huge fan of roller coasters but being the "bag holder" is not too shabby because I can munch on a Churro while I wait!

Here's my tangent: I just wrote a blog post about teachers! I think you'll appreciate it :)

1. I want to go skydiving so bad.
2. I used to be terrified of roller coasters until college when I lived in Tampa right next to Busch Gardens. If you are a Florida resident you can go once and get in free the rest of the year...best deal ever!! I rode the Sheikra a bazillion times (so scary/fun every time) and my most favorite is the Montu. Hi Janae, I started following your blog a few months back and love your optimism. I had not become a follower until today, cause I was out on a run and passed a SQUIRREL and thought of you and the quote at the top of your blog. So absolutely, I counted that squirrel as ONE (in my head) and contemplated whether or not I could count him as TWO, considering he had 4 legs! How's that for a tangent!?!? I just love a good laugh while running by myself :). Hope you get a kick out of it too!

I have been skydiving and bungee jumping, although I'll probably never do either again, haha (not because I didn't enjoy them, but I think one should only risk their life so many times!:). And actually, I thought the bungee jumping was more scary than the skydiving for some reason!

Glad to hear about the cross training! I don't really do cross training now that I'm training for a tri (or is it that I do ALL cross training?;), but when I run I try and work some bikes in there...but honestly I am still working on not hating swimming so I don't do that as much as I should. I really want to like it more because I think it complements running well since it's less hard on your joints!

One of my best friends did a semester in Hawaii...I was so jealous. That's something that I didn't take advantage of and really regret now. I wish my job would pay me to go live somewhere else for 6 months!

I've never been bungee jumping or sky diving...I think I might have a heart attack, but its also something I'd like to try.

I make my own frozen bananas with chocolate (and I put peanut butter in the middle!!) so come over to my house and I'll feed you as many as you want! We can pretend we're at Disney.

I cannot keep a secret from someone to save my life. I ruin christmas for someone every year.

It upsets me when people don't think I'm funny because I think that's one of my best traits.

That's awesome that you spent a semester in Hawaii. HOW AWESOME!!!! Where did you go on your mission for BYU? I'm just curious. (Everyone has to do that, right?)

Did you know that you can buy frozen bananas covered in chocolate at the grocery store? I saw it the other day on the Today show!!! Check the freezer section. I'm sure they aren't as good as the amusement park ones but I bet they are yummy!!

I LOVE rollercoasters!

I'm so excited about your PT appointment! It sounds like you went to see the right guy! Yay!
Skydiving is on my list. But the hubby says the kids have to be grown first. I don't think I could do bungie jumping. I don't think I'd like that jerk at the end. But who knows!
